On another message board for Christians, there was a topic about “why women should wear skirts”. Now, before I came back completely to my faith I started getting the idea of someday giving up my jeans in favor of skirts. Slowly, my wardrobe is being taken over with knee length or longer skirts (love the tiered skirts…think they call them prairie or something skirts?) and I do find I like the way I look and feel in them. God made me a woman, I think I should look and feel like one. So was that a “sign” of sorts? (Yes, I firmly believe God is still speaking to us, just in a different way)

And what does everyone think about that concept? That women ought to wear skirts or dresses all the time? Does Scripture point to that or the teachings of the Church? It’s something that’s been in my mind alot lately…

Are you implying that Scottish men don’t dress like real men? 😃

Oh, dear. Another can open, worms everywhere.

No, the Catholic church does not teach that women should be required to wear skirts. If it did, a skirt would be a requirement for a woman to enter St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. There are individual Catholic women who have a personal devotion that draws them to wear skirts, and you may be one of them, which IMO is pretty cool. But anyone who tells you that the Catholic church requires skirts for women is misinformed. The Catholic church requires modesty in dress and behavior for both men and women.

And because I wear trousers to Mass as often as I do skirts, doesn’t make me less of a woman. No one would ever look at me and mistake me for a man, believe me.

My personal opinion is that skirts and dresses, when worn modestly, enhance a woman’s femininty and add a degree of class. Jeans are so comfortable that they’re hard to not like, but it’s nice to see someone dressed up on occassion.

As a 49 year-old married man my opinion is that skirts are much more lady-like, attractive, and even modest (tight pants, believe it or not, leave less to a mans imagination). I wish my wife wore them occasionally, but she detests hose.

I’m not advocating any rule here; just my personal opinion (for what it’s worth).:twocents:

As a 19 year old male discerning the priesthood, I must say that girls who wear skirts (modest ones), gain a high level of respect from me. I don’t lose respect for other girls, but in a time where girls wear jeans constantly, girls wearing skirts are amazing. :clapping:

Should they or should they have to…two totally different issues. I don’t think they should have to.

While I used to almost always wear jeans, I’ve started wearing skirts mostly. My tip if you like to wear skirts is that knee length is probably the best of both worlds when it comes to modesty and practicality. The other day I was at my sister’s house right after her baby’s baptism. We were both dressed in the skirts we had worn to the baptism. Hers was long and beautiful. Mine was I think a little more practical. It came right to my knees. Well, her 4 year old spilled a nearly full bowl of ceral with milk all over the kitchen floor while we were getting dinner ready. She looked somewhat stressed and uncertain about what to do, so I said “That’s ok, I’ll take care of it.” Since my skirt was shorter, it was no problem for me to get on my knees to clean up the floor. See, that is always one of my main requirements when considering purchasing something new for daily wear. Can I see myself on my hands and knees cleaning the floor in this? That’s why I used to wear jeans almost exclusively. I do find skirts can be just about as practical though.

Of course, I’m typing this sitting cross legged on the floor in front of the “old computer” wearing a pair of my favorite jeans, 501’s. 🙂

I think it’s a throwback to our history. Only a few hundred years ago women had no option - they wore skirts - regardless of the task at hand.

Some gal finally figured out that wearing pants would be much more convenient for working in, and did it… but then there’s the consequence of seeing a woman’s “curves” not buried under 6 yards of cloth… but only under 1 layer… Ruh Ro Rorge…

FF a few hundred years and now a gal in a skirt (of traditional proportions/cut/fit) garners accolades.

My wife is a “farm girl”. Imagine going to work in a skirt, or in blue jeans… which would you choose?

Garments are tools. Worn to fit/fulfill a purpose. You use a tool for a particular job… (fill in the blanks here…)

What is the underlying reasoning?

If modesty, then the type of skirt or trousers is more important than the fact that the clothing is a skirt or a pair of trousers.

There are so many styles of both, that I would find it hard to say across the board that either skirts or pants are more fitting or feminine.

I work in a warehouse. A number of women come from cultures that teach them to wear skirts only (some for religious reasons, others not) Some of the skirts…even though long…lets just say they catch some attention.

This may just be because it is “rare” to see a women (in that setting) in a skirt. And anything unique draws the eye. It could be the leg peeking through the slit (a modest slit that is necessary to move easily in an ankle length skirt)

Wouldn’t it be nice (sigh) if the issue was that women should not be expected in any society to do work that requires one wear trousers. (dreaming here, it was a long week at work) And that men did all that.

sorry, I was one who was happy to be barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen…wearing a maternity dress and baking bread. Ah the good old days.

well that would lead to annther question them. should women wear their hair long…

I think it depends on ‘why’. Do you like them? Are they comfortable? If so, enjoy!

Do I always think skirts are more feminine or attractive? Not at all. I think a woman in khakis and a polo looks WAY better than a woman in a frumpy denim jumper (or skirt).

I think it depends on style, fit and also, how a woman carries herself in whatever she is wearing. —KCT

I find skirts easier to work in. More comfortable when active and chasing after the children and now the grandchildren. For me and now my daughter they are just how we dress. We choose to dress so for modesty.

To force anyone to wear modest clothing (if modesty is the reason) is just plain silly. Forced modesty does not reflect the heart and intentions.

OTOH forced moderation in dress would be nice in some public places.😃

I find one piece bathing suits that cover the necessary places modest when in the pool or at the beach.👍

When I went to Catholic high school I followed the uniform rules and never wore my skirt too short, but I still wore a pair of shorts under the skirt because I knew the boys liked to peek up the girls’ skirts when we walked up the stairs. It was easier in the winter when we were allowed to wear solid color blue pants instead of the skirts and did not have to deal with the boys looking.

I may have told this story before. One of my additional duties in the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea was to be the General’s Piper. For Christmas of '80, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders came to visit us. They had Christmas dinner in the General’s Mess, and each young lady had an officer escort. I piped them over the stone bridge leading to the mess.

So there I am in the mess, in me saffron Irish kilts, and a friend of mine motions me over to his table – where there are a half dozen or so cheerleaders and their escorts.

“She wants to ask you a question.”

So this cute little girl blushes and says, “What do wear under the kilts?”

And I draws meself up in all me Irish glory and says, “I’ll tell yez, me dharlin’, th’ barbarous Scots wear nothin atall under the kilts. Sure an’ we Irish are more civilized. We wear the same t’ing, but we tie a knot in it to keep it from dhraggin’ th’ ground.”😃

Hi RhyannaRose, the only principle scriptrue gives us is modesty. And, you are old enough to know if what you are wearing is modest in our culture.

Excellent post Dan!

I intend to give it to a person I know who is a skirt only person who bases her decision on

“I let the bible dictate how I dress” type.

OF COURSE! I don’t know what the OP was thinking, but there’s no one on this Board that will ever suggest women should run around bottomless!
