Should you not pray for competition?

It seems kind of unworthy for God to do some sort of divine intervention just so your football team would win or something.
 
How do you know that when players are praying before, during, or after a game, they are praying for victory? Can you read their hearts and minds? When we play ball games here at the seminary, we always pray for God’s protection upon all the players and that He will give us the grace to compete in a true spirit of fraternity so that our competition will be a means to growing in virtue. We always thank Him after the game for the gift He has given us, the gift of fraternity and the gift of sport.

And even with mainstream secular sports, if you listen in on team prayers, which some stations do air, you’ll notice that the prayers are not for victory, but for safety and good sportsmanship, etc.

God is known to intervene for the sake of the righteous in battle with the unrighteous, but that’s about as far as we know that He has providentially supported one side over another. Modern day sports? While He could do likewise, it would be unlikely if simply for the sake of answering prayers for the side that asked for victory. But you never know; if a victory for one side has ramifications and consequences that ultimately serve His holy and unfathomable plans, He might have some influence there.
 
Athletes pray for their own safety and God to allow their best performance, it is not about praying for the competition to fail…Tebow taught us this well.
