I heard that too, and I think it was Luke & Laura on General Hospital. I also heard from a minister friend that it was standard among Protestants to do it for interfaith marriages to show unity in Christ (nothing to do with unity with each other) when mixed marriages became more the norm in the 70s.The story I heard was that it originated as part of the story line in a soap opera - the writers of the soap opera didn’t want to specify a particular religion for the church they were having their fictional characters married in, so they invented a marriage ritual just for the purposes of the soap opera, and it had a “unity candle” in it.
