I can’t understand why the Shroud of Turin isn’t exposed every day. Other images or relics such as the Virgin of Guadalupe or saint’s uncorrupted bodies are exposed all the time, but why not the Shroud? I’d think faith would increase if it was free to see.

It is extremely fragile and sensitive to the light, plus after all these years, the image is difficult to see.

the tilma is kept under bulletproof glass after an attempt to destroy it with a bomb. the faithful may see it but not touch it or get near it.

Exactly. It was with the greatest reluctance that even teh small samples of the Shroud used for carbon dating and other tests have been given, as it is extremely fragile.

And for all the relics of the saints that ARE on permanent public display, there are more that aren’t - kept in various places but only, for example, brought out once a year on the saint’s feast day, or, if too fragile (and fabric especially is one thing that is quite fragile), never exposed at all.

My understanding is that the shroud is a fake because it is only about 1000 years old.

Well that gets into a MUCH bigger issue. I’m actually looking into it myself
When I read the title of this thread, that’s what I thought the topic was: why hasn’t more press been given to the fraudulence of the Shroud?

Maybe the OP could have asked, “Why isn’t the Shroud Of Turin displayed?”

It is my understanding that the carbon dating was wrong because the samples taken were taken from the corners of the shroud which had been mended by some nuns after a fire. Plus, this is a cloth which has been handled by a lot of people over a lot of years, there is always going to be particles from other dates on any sample they take. I am not saying that I believe 100% that the shroud is Christ’s burial cloth, but I am pretty sure that the carbon dating to the 1100’s or so has been discredited thoroughly.

Hope this helps.

Because there is no proof of the fraudulence of the Shroud.

Even if it turns out to be fake, its always going to be a piece of history and controversy and even being only 1000 years old, it still would be too fragile to put on display.

Because there is no proof of the fraudulence of the Shroud.
And therein lies the dilemma; There is no proof that it is genuine, and there is no proof it is a fraud.

I don’t think the Catholic Church has the ability to decipher this mystery.

P.S. I’m not sure that the Catholic Church owns the shroud… I think a prominent Italian family owns it. I’d appreciate it if somebody could clarify this for me. Thanks in advance.
