I’m a cradle Catholic. I was baptised and had my first Holy Communion. Not sure if I was named after a saint or if my mother just liked the name. She was into French names. I will just take it that I was named after St Colette 🙂 Ooops! that’s if there is a St Colette:shrug:
Maybe so. There is actually at least one St. Colette: catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=268

I don’t think having an individual patron saint is a universal practice within Catholicism (maybe mostly Eastern Catholics?), but among those that do have them they’re your personal intercessor in heaven (more or less) and a saint you develop a relationship with and pray to regularly. Often people will celebrate their feast days and learn about them, so that they remain a reminder and inspiration in the individual’s life.

And that’s why most icon corners will have an icon of the person’s patron saint. 👍

Thank you so much:thumbsup: I will try and find a icon of St Colette 🙂

I finally have a pic of my icon corner! Since there is still at least some interest in this thread, I’ll post it here. I welcome any thoughts or questions you may have. If you want to see the same image in more detail, click here.

As far as I am concerned, having an individual patron saint (or in cases patron saints, as some also get a different one in confirmation) is a universal practice within Catholicism. (correct me if I’m wrong)

In some countries/cultures, these names are called “Christian names” and barely used outside formal religious ocasions, such as here in China. These are names of saints/blessed people which we (or the priest, our family etc.) have chosen, for converts (at least here in China), it is often of a saint who we admire. Such as mine, Catharina, named after St Catherine Laboure.

Question: does the Eastern Rite use/accept statues or Eastern style icons put together with Latin ones? since I once drew some Russian Orthodox crazy by having an oriental Mother and Child icon with a Madonna statue (Our Lady of Sheshan), and later again by having the same icon with a Latin Divine Mercy icon.

Will post up a picture of my (sorta wierd and mixed) icon corner when I get the chance to, my camera screen just cracked.

Thank you for clarifying.

While I can’t answer your question about the Eastern Rite, not all EO are hardliners about icons. While some would throw a fit about my Trinity icon, my two statues, and my Catholic shadowbox, a lot don’t care at all. Another example is my godfather having an Eastern-styled Divine Mercy icon in his icon corner.

And I’d love to have an oriental Mother and Child eventually - I think they look really nice.

Wow! this is so beautiful. I’m not having much look with finding a St Colette icon, only medals 😦
Thank you! I’m not sure where you’d find one of her. I did a quick search and only found one for an Orthodox Saint Colette. While there’s no problem venerating her, I believe they are different people so that doesn’t do much for you. Good luck in your search!

Buster, is that a pic of Mother Theresa in the background? 🙂

This is mine before I moved houses, apparently it was in my wardrobe and really mixed style. Just to say, I’m Latin Rite and barely gets this stuff right though trying very hard, so please excuse me if anything in it seems wrong and help me to improve it.

Excluding the candle stands, from the right side: Our Lady of Sheshan statue, Mother and Child icon, Latin Crucifix, Latin style Divine Mercy icon. In the middle is a rosary.

Photograph taken in Feburary 2012.

Apparently the picture doesn’t show, please click: sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/s720x720/429308_195302367244199_1726928426_n.jpg

This is wonderful! Where did you find that icon of Saint Anne?
It is one I mounted. I found the image online and mounted it from there myself. If you are not familiar with that particular icon, it is an Orthodox wonder working icon of Saint Anna. It used to stream myrrh but hasn’t for years. Miracles are still attributed to it, though, and it is still giving off a very sweet fragrance. I’ve been blessed this summer to not only venerate the wonder working icon but also touch my copy to the original wonder working icon itself.

What a blessing!

I’ve never heard of an icon corner before, so this thread is very interesting to me. I like this very much. Can you tell me a little bit about OLO Sheshan - I’ve never heard of her before?
