Hello,

I’m not sure if this is the right sub-forum, if not please just move my thread to where it belongs.

Ever since coming back home to the faith I wondered about the issue of being “in a relationship” with a woman, and how to go about it in a godly way while not yet married. I understand that the purpose of such a relationship, or of “dating” in general is finding the right person for marriage, and that sex belongs inside the covenant of marriage.

Yet I still have to admit that there is a huge difference between a woman who I would call my girlfriend, and any other person. Obviously, she is much closer to me and means much more to me then other people. Therefore there is a desire to treat her differently, too. That includes the physical level.

When it comes to physically showing affection, how can I discern what’s appropriate, and what’s sinful? For example, the image of Mary Magdalene passionately kissing Jesus’ feet was of course a gesture of showing great honor and devotion to Christ. Do you think I could kiss the feet of my girlfriend in a similar way, to honor her and to show her affection and devotion, or would this lead to sinful thoughts or even be sinful in itself already? This is particularly a scene I always have in my mind.

I understand for some this could already be considered sexual foreplay, or even a sexual act itself (considering fetishes etc.). But for me it would be more about honoring this very special person in a physical way. But then again, isn’t sex also in part to physically honor your spouse? Not an easy subject.

Anyways I’m curious to what you think about this topic and thankful for every response.

You hit the nail on the head at the end of your post.

To honor, and wish the very best for her (essentially …heaven) … YOU CAN DO ANYTHING that will assist in this!

Display of affection is not sinful in and of itself…we express our soul through our body! So a beutiful intimate moment where you were to honor her by kissing her feet (so long as your intentions are those previously stated…that you want to ONLY bless her and help her realize her own dignity and want her by this action to bring her closer to CHrist)…then by all means …kiss her foot!

HOWEVER…you MUST be accountable for yourself and your partner…you need to know where an action might… take you …if you know what I mean. You need to know your limits and if you think you are going to cause you or her to fall into temptation…don’t do it (because your purpose is to bring her closer to christ…not farther).

That’s why sex is saved for marriage…it’s the only proper context in which it would bring someone closer to Christ.

If you need any help…don’t hesistate to message!

God bless, Michael

Thank you so much for this Michael. You explained it all so clearly and powerfully

Mark. Can I suggest something for you ? Have you ever heard of Pope John Paul II’s teachings on theology of the body ?

It’s amazing (and it sounds like you’re already attempting to live it) . Google : Christopher West. He does a review of the popes teaching. He’s got a website with books, dvd’s , cds to buy…look into them . AMAZING!

One in particular I want to suggest: “Woman, God’s masterpiece” …its a cd that will change your life!

You may be able to hear him speaking on youtube as well.

God bless!

Michael

Yes I have heard of theology of the body by JPII but for some reason never really looked into it. Thank you for bringing it to my attention and also telling me about Christopher West and his works (I haven’t heard of him). I will definitely check his resources out, especially the CD you named sounds really promising.

Markus:

 Please do not do this, because it is really bizarre and weird, not because it may be sinful.

Do not do things that are sexually tempting. Only you know what is tempting to you.

why do you think so?
Because it is an unnatural display of affection. No one except someone who really likes feet would think to kiss the feet of his or her loved one. How would that even happen? You are both sitting at dinner, and you casually mention that you want to kiss her feet? Because you want to be like Mary and her like Jesus?

If I were her, I would be freaked out.

Also, it is not even a social norm today. It is one think to display affection that has meaning in the current society, but it seems odd to single out a particular mannerism that was in force 2000 years ago.

No, I think you are misunderstanding me. I do not want to do this for my pleasure, but hers. Sure, I can also get pleasure out of doing something nice for her, but the focus is on her pleasure, not mine. If she would not want me to do it or be “freaked out” like you said, it obviously would be of no use. This practice would only make sense if she felt honored, highly esteemed & respected, and cherished by this act.

Is it an unnatural display of affection? I would rather call it an uncommon display of affection, and I am very fine with that. When it comes to love, I do not want to be satisfied with “the norm” or “the average”. I want to go as far as I can go in being a lover. But that’s why I made this thread, because I don’t want to go overboard and fall into sin.

I agree that the kissing of feet is not a social norm in today’s western culture. But honestly I don’t care very much about the social norms/cultures/standards of man, I rather try to focus on the heart of God, and his standards. As a rule of thumb I would say, if it was OK for Jesus, who am I to have a problem with it.

Btw the kissing of her feet was just an example that I used (because it is something that is powerful to me and often comes to my mind). This thread is also about the general topic (showing affection while not yet married). You can think about other (possibly unclear) examples if you can’t relate to this one, such as massaging her back, carrying her in one’s arms, close slow-dancing or other intimate dances, kissing her neck etc.

Well feet get awful dirty you know no matter how hard you try to keep them clean. Then there foot bacteria and all sorts of stuff not to mention that is sounds a little creepy.

Haha well I think dealing with that would be a very small sacrifice if I could bless that special someone through it, and perhaps help her understand that I appreciate every part of her.

I am not.

I know. That does not change anything I said.

I am still confused as to why you think you could bring this up in any reasonable way, and why you think anyone would react well to this proposal.
Is it an unnatural display of affection?
Yes. You proved it yourself when you said that the reason would be to emulate a biblical story. Thus your own attraction to the idea is based on artificial, not natural, predisposition. How many times do you observe this happening among couples?
I would rather call it an uncommon display of affection, and I am very fine with that. When it comes to love, I do not want to be satisfied with “the norm” or “the average”.
The average lover does not kill his significant other. Would you depart from the norm in that way?

Jesus was still a man, and men are born into cultures. Cultural context is relevant. And kissing feet is not divine per se, so your presumed justification falls short.

Affection is good. Do not place yourself in sexual temptation, as I said. Otherwise you are fine.

I don’t understand why the feet example has gotten so many bad responses.

Is it an odd idea which is out of the ordinary? Absolutely

Is it somehow dangerous? Not really, especially if the feet are clean. 🤷

Is it something most women would find odd or disturbing? Quite likely

Are there any women out there who would appreciate it for wha it was intended to be? Very possibly, there are a lot of different people with a lot of different views about life.

Its just an example, its not something the OP is going to force on a woman who doesn’t appreciate/want it. I just don’t get what the problem is. 🤷

Michael I wanted to bring up your recommendations again, because I’ve started to check some of it out now. Christopher West is really a great speaker and I have listened to a bunch of his talks on youtube, they’ve all been really eye-opening and also entertaining. In the process I’ve found many interesting videos of other peopling talking about and explaining the theology of the body as well.

I really want to suggest anybody who’s interested to just type “theology of the body” into youtube, because a lot of interesting material will come up. Personally I’m checking what would be the best way to order some of West’s CDs (I don’t live in the US) or if I might find some of his material in a local bookstore. And I’ve also gotten the actual theology of the body by John Paul II (the whole thing, 400 pages 🙂 ) and am starting to read my way through it. I’s already been a real blessing to me and I hope a lot of people will have a look at it.

Why not kiss the back of her hand? That’s still in style and non-threatening.

Is it an unnatural display of affection? I would rather call it an uncommon display of affection, and I am very fine with that.
I think, Markus, you have argued your position quite nicely. A trenchant point, indeed: it’s not unnatural. But it is uncommon.

So what, then? Uncommon is, well, uncommon. But not bizarre. 🤷

While I would not take any pleasure in my husband kissing my feet as a display of his affection, if your girlfriend finds honor in this, I say go for it.

That’s a good idea but I don’t think one excludes the other. I actually would like to do both.

Personally, I feel like there is no part of the female body which would not deserve to be kissed, but while not yet married I think we’d obviously need to keep it somewhat tame (which is basically why I made the thread).

Thank you for the encouragement 🙂

I didn’t really plan or expect this thread to be mostly about the foot-kissing example, but hey, I’m happy and thankful for people posting their opinions about it.

Many couples kiss one another’s feet - with the special woman in your life Markus, through God, The Holy Spirit and Jesus, you do what is special and right for you and the special Lady in your life.

It is not bizaare or weird at all.

Please Dear God our Heavenly Father, The Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ our Saviour and Our Lady Mary Mother of Jesus could you please send Markus 'the right Christian woman with the same Christian Morals, Values and Attributes as Markus, bringing them together easily and in Unity with and through you Dear Jesus Christ our Saviour, Amen.

Our Father who Art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven, give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from all evil, Amen.
