NEWSMAX (5/25/05) – When shareholders of media conglomerate Viacom show up for their annual meeting tomorrow, they’ll face the wrath of Catholic League President Dr. William Donahue over a shocking Showtime episode that slandered the late Mother Teresa and her order of nuns in the vilest of terms.

According to Donahue, who plans a press conference in front of the hotel in New York City where the Viacom meeting is being held, an episode of Showtime’s Penn and Teller show “Holier Than Thou” was a "Nazi-like assault on Catholicism, and on the person the show calls “Mother F***ing Teresa.” Showtime is owned by Viacom.

Stormed Donahue: "In the 12 years that I have been president of the Catholic League, I have never witnessed a more vicious attack on Catholicism than what appeared this week on the Showtime program ‘Penn and Teller.’ The episode, ‘Holier Than Thou,’ was a frontal assault on Mother Teresa and her order of nuns, Missionaries of Charity (as well as Gandhi and the Dali Lama).

"Like most Americans, I like parodies and have no problem, per se, with irreverent humor. But when humor becomes insult, that is a different story. And that is what happens here: comedy quickly morphs to vitriol. Indeed, as the show progresses, the level of anger becomes palpable and the degree of distortion becomes mindboggling. This is no comedy – it is Nazi propaganda right out of the Leni Riefenstahl school of filmmaking.

"The Mother Teresa that the world has come to love and revere is made to look like a cruel, exploitative, self-serving nun who ripped off the poor. We are told that Mother Teresa intentionally let the poor suffer, providing neither beds nor bathroom facilities. ‘She had the fing coin and pissed it away on nunneries,’ says Penn. As for the nuns who worked with Mother Teresa, they are referred to as 'fing c***s.’

This is the exact reason why everytime the cable company calls and tries to sell me on buying the movie channels that i say “NO”. She is an amazing women and those exec have no souls if the only thing they can do is pick on a women who did nothing that wasn’t for GOD. People like to throw insults at those who have quailties they want to hold. They get so upset that they don’t have those quailties; that they have to try to tranish her image. It won’t work!

GOD BLESS,

Sick! Appalling!!! Sacrilegious !!! This is what has happened and will continue to worsen as we allow legislators who do not have nor abide by our Catholic principles into office and we allow media to say anything without being held responsible for their actions. We can no longer afford to sit back and say its out of our hands or that we should not say anything because of seperation of Church and state. We must all become socially and politically responsible. Mother Teresa’s defense is in our hands!

Love & peace in Christ,
Bob

What a juvenile and disgusting method of trying to be ‘funny.’ Why is it necessary to use profanity or to demean a true saint? I am unfamiliar with this show. Are they usually this hateful?

I would trust Mother Theresa and those like her anyday with my “coin” rather than two hateful people like Penn and Teller. I do not have a television right now thus I do not have cable, so they already do not get my coin. Does Viacom also own MTV and VH1? If so, I will take those sites off my “favorite” list and avoid them too.

Viacom owns CBS, MTV, VH1, Paramount, and some other cable assets.

CBS PETITIONED TO PROBE SHOWTIME

Catholic League president William Donohue explained today the league’s strategy for dealing with Showtime, the cable network that recently aired a hate-filled episode of “Penn and Teller”:
“On May 23, 24 and 27, Showtime’s ‘Penn and Teller’ aired the ‘Holier Than Thou’ episode that has so enraged Catholics, as well as people of all faiths (click here). The obscene assault on Mother Teresa, her Missionaries of Charity and the Catholic Church was arguably the most vicious anti-Catholic fare ever shown on television in the United States. An excerpt of this show was sent to 350 persons of influence, including every bishop who commands a diocese. Now we want results.

“Beginning today, we are launching a nation-wide campaign demanding that CBS initiate a probe into this matter. Why CBS? Showtime is owned by Viacom, and Viacom has many subsidiaries in the entertainment and communications industries, none of which is more prominent than CBS. Now it may be that those who work at CBS had nothing to do with the offending Showtime episode. Nonetheless, CBS bears corporate responsibility. Just as important, the famous CBS name has been sullied by what Showtime did.

“We are focusing our attention on two persons: Leslie Moonves, Chairman and CEO of CBS, and Nancy Tellem, President, CBS Paramount Network (Showtime is a Paramount TV studio that will remain with CBS even if Viacom splits into two entities this summer). The petition (click here) seeks justice: We want those responsible for this bigoted assault on Catholicism to be held accountable for the damage they have done.

“In addition to pushing this petition on our website, we will ask our members to get involved: the July-August edition of Catalyst, our monthly journal, will reprint the petition. We are most proud of the support that we have received from those outside the Catholic community. They know what’s at stake and they look to CBS to correct it

I heard about this on another forum months ago & I’m glad that the Catholic League got involved. I try not to think about how much of my cable bill supports the filth that passes for entertainment these days and why I can’t select only the channels that I want & exclude others. While I don’t get Showtime or any of the other pay stations that are extra under my cable plan, I’m still paying for disgusting programs like Howard Stern, MTV, etc. just because they’re in the regular package. Kind of ironic that to get EWTN, you get the garbage along with it whether you want it or not.

Penn Jilette has always been a very vocal atheist. I think I’ve even seen where in his house in Las Vegas he has tiles and so forth bearing a logo he designed that says “No God.” He’s the kind of atheist who’s very pushy, who mentions his atheism in contexts where religious belief or the lack thereof really don’t apply. It’s an obsession with him.

Beyond that, it isn’t even funny. In order for parody to be humorus, one must have knowledge about what is being parodied. In this case, it would be Catholics.

From the outside looking in (a former Catholic), I can say that in addition to offending Catholics, it simply isn’t funny to the rest of us.

I think its because of our sinfulness, is the reason why this is happening. The Lord gives us what we deserve, due to our society’s approval and normalization of sin. I remember hearing about this earlier on this site. Not only should half of our celebrities be in jail! But if there is anyone who I would identify as a loose cannon its the people who aired “the holier than thou” episode.
