Shrines along I-80/90?

We’re taking a family vacaton and were wondering if anyone knows any Shrines or Catholic places of interest near Interstate 80/90. We’re going from central Illinois, up I-55, on tlo I-80/90 East through Gary, Ind, through OH, and on toward Erie, PA.

Anyone know of any good spots along the way? Our son is eight months, so it doesn’t have to be kid friendly per se.

in ohio, when rt 80 east intersects with I 75, just about 40 miles south on I 75 there is the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation. it’s a lovely place. the downstairs is the miracle hall with all the crutches, wheelchairs etc.

Not technically a “shrine,” but stop at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, right off 80-90. You can go to Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart–a beautiful Gothic-style church like you wouldn’t expect to see in the middle-of-nowhere Indiana. You can also visit the Grotto, which is a replica of the Grotto at Lourdes, located right behind the Basilica. And there are plenty of kid/stroller-friendly quads and sidewalks to wander around and stretch your legs.

Somewhere around here there is a very impressive shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The image is made from some sort of tile or mosaic (if I remember correctly) and it is the size of a tall building. It’s really awesome. I haven’t been there in years so I can’t remember exactly where it is, but I’ll ask my mom if your interested.
 
St. Jude at Our Lady of Guadalupe on the southeast side of Chicago. However, if you really want to have a better idea, go to Masstimes.org and look up churches and shrines based on the cities you will be waving to on your 65 mph drive. This site does infact list shrines and cathedrals within a certain area and, as stated, if you list the cities you’ll be passing, you’ll most likely come across at least one shrine no more than 10 miles off of any of the routes you are taking.

Dang, Rach, ya beat me to it! 🙂 Notre Dame is a beautiful campus and the Basilica is a must-see. South Bend is a good place to break your journey if you are traveling on 80/90.

Mind you, the toll road is an awful mess at the moment, they’re doing some MAJOR work on it right now just outside of Gary, so be prepared for delays.

Well not all the quads are stroller friendly or people friendly as of last week. Hopefullyfor the students sake the construction mess will be cleared up before moving in day. it was like an obstacle course walking around campus during July.

Just to forewarn, the Basilica is undergoing some renovation at the moment. The inside is still open, but the outside is almost completely covered in scaffolding.

Oh, it will be. The only way that construction projects get done on time in South Bend is if the University is involved. When the rich parents/alumni are in town, the campus is spotless and this includes move-in, move-out, graduation and football games. The only project that won’t be done in time is the new Center for Social Concerns building going up next to the library.
