People always say there is no evidence that Jesus ever existed. But what about the Shroud of Turin? For myself I believe it is authentic and I would love to see it in person someday. What do others think?
  • Shroud is authentic
  • Shroud is fake
  • Who cares

I believe that it is authentic. I didn’t in the past (nor did many I think.)

But when you begin to investigate it, especially the details of how the first test was performed and what we know today as fact, it’s hard to dismiss the evidence. As the method of testing and our knowledge of science evolves, it seems support that it is authentic.

If its not authentic, then it simply remains as the most remarkable artifact known in human history.

To be fair, the idea that Jesus of Nazareth was mythical is an extreme/minority position. Regardless of what one thinks of the Shroud, there can be little question of the first century existence of an historical Jesus.

It’s who He was and what He did that’s debated.

But what’s remarkable about the shroud is that if it is authentic, this is the most scientific evidence we have that he did exist and that he resurrected from the dead.

If you think about it, Christianity hinges on the death and resurrection of Christ. This could play a role in conversion of skeptics who search for the truth through a particular lens (pun intended.)

I think it would be a remarkable gift from God to those who may have a closed heart.

Yes it does. Verses 13-14. Also verse 19.

Its a medivial fake made in France for tourism purposes.

Care to explain on how it was made?

It carbon dates to 1260 AD. This was determined by Oxford scientists.

Well you’re an open-minded skeptic, so I’m curious if you have you ever investigated alternative viewpoints on why a 30 year old test was possibly flawed.

But since you claim it to be a medieval forgery, perhaps you can address my original question on how it was made?

No idea. What is the image made of? Is it blood? If so, has it been varified to be human blood? Is there dna to test jewishness? Indicators of diet? There are a millian questions.

This claim has been addressed numerous times. The Shroud was damaged in a fire, and the corners of it were repaired. That portion is where the test samples came from. Unfortunately, due to its age and importance, the shroud’s caretakers are reluctant to allow any more samples to be take. I believe in the shroud’s authenticity, but I really wish they’d let them do some more tests…

As for what the image is made of, testing indicates that it is essentially burned into the cloth, similarly to how people’s shadows were burned into adjacent walls during the nuclear blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I am surprised at the results so far. Although the options where a bit limited. I voted in favor, but that is probably overstating it. I lean towards thinking that it is authentic, but who knows.

Well the people saying so are up against the historical consensus among all actual historians, believers and non-believers alike. It is an established historical fact that Jesus did exist, that he lived in Nazareth with his mother Mary, that he was baptized by John the Baptist, that he had 12 disciples, that he preached about the Kingdom of God, that he was a healer, that he upset the Jewish authorities, and that he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; all historians consider these to be historical fact.
For myself I believe it is authentic and I would love to see it in person someday. What do others think?
As for the shroud, I guess I’m agnostic on its authenticity. For me, it doesn’t really matter if it’s authentic or not, it’s still an object of great devotion and ought to be treated with respect regardless of its authenticity.

I wish you had added an I don’t know option. I would like to believe it is real, but I don’t know.

I never created the poll, but you’re right that there should be an option for ‘I don’t know.’

What I find interesting is that they know the image is not painted on. Nobody apparently in the 21st century can figure out how it was made, nor has anyone duplicated it completely. So, if the shroud is fake, then people in the 1200’s were much, much smarter than we are now (actually they probably were), and could manipulate cloth in a manner we have no clue how to do now.

I do know that the blood stains were found to be real blood. I wonder if you could get DNA from them?

I used to think it was not as old as Jesus’ time and was an artistic creation, but the more I have read about it over the years, the more I have come to believe it’s the real deal.

That’s almost exactly my view as well. Evidence against seems to be floundering and evidence for seems to be more accurate. We will probably never know for sure, until we get upstairs.

Blessings,
Stephie
