Last night on ABC news, they had a report of a professor from “New St. Andrews College” who said he thinks he can reinact how the shroud of tourin was made. Anyway, in that same report, they (ABC) indicated that when they took a carbon dating of the cloth some time ago, they found the shroud to be only 650 years old.

I thought that the carbon dating test was later refuted because some mold got into the test tube or something and it turned out to be inconclusive.

Can somebody set me straight here? Was this honest reporting or was ABC leaving out some facts?

God bless, Jim

Firstly its called Turin after the Italian city. Second the carbon dating undertaken in the past has had its findings disputed by many see shroud.com/, ** Los Alamos Scientist Proves 1988 Carbon-14 Dating of Shroud Used An Invalid Rewoven Sample**

Thirdly Catholics are not in any way required to believe in the authenticity of the Turin Shroud. There are more important reasons to be a Catholic. ‘Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.’ Hebrews 11:1

Anything on ABC needs to be regarded with a wary eye. Like the poll about Terry Schiavo where they depicted her as on life support, which she has never been. No matter, they got the poll results they wanted. I was held to a higher standard reporting for my HS newspaper.

Carbon 14 dating is extremely unreliable.

I heard a true story about a bunch of scientists that carbon dated some paintings on a cave wall. They were very excited because they dated back to the cavemen. One of the local villagers told the scientists that he had drawn the paintings when he was a child.

Here is some more info on the unreliability of carbon 14 dating:
