It can be tough to be Catholic and defend our faith in today’s climate. My saints are women from the Early Church. Their demonstrated courage in martyrdom has been my go to for courage at times.

Thanks, now I don’t have to look it up. 😃 Neither jelly donuts nor pancakes are my thing.

I”m in Canada but I’m familiar with the expression. Now am I going to have to look that one up too, only to find it doesn’t mean what I thought it did? 😜

I have no problem with the ashes on my forehead. I’m risking coronavirus to go to Ash Wednesday…
But I miss Mass. I feel so empty without it.

I have lived in France for 18 years (two Archdioceses), during which I’ve attended early morning Ash Wednesday Mass annually and walked around all day with the ashes on my forehead. No one has ever harassed me for it.

I leave room in the universe that people may have insulted or derided me from afar (out of earshot) but there’s no way to know for sure. I also cannot speak for what happens in dioceses I’ve never lived in. I have no doubt that some of the faithful encounter direct opposition here and there, but I wouldn’t say such treatment is systematic.

English pancakes which some European countries use are lovely but the scotch one you have in america aren’t very nice at all in my opinion.
 
I live in francophone benelux and work in a big organization where the French are very influential.

If you wear the ash you could expect to be told it’s inappropriate. Ditto if you wear a crucifix. A colleague of mine was threatened with discipline if he continued to keep a small crib on his desk in his solo office during advent.

This sort of thing is by no means rare and we can expect it to increase.
 
Can’t you guys sue for stuff like that over there?
In USA people bring lawsuits all the time when their employer tells them they can’t wear something religious at work (yarmulkes, etc. )
 
Our pancakes aren’t exactly like Scotch ones – we use fat/oil in our pancakes, which the Scotch versions do not.
 
I’m sorry people around you behave like this, although I give places of work latitude within the law to decide what is and isn’t allowed on their premises. (I know nothing of relevant law in Belgium, the Netherlands or Luxembourg.)

Nowhere did I say this sort of thing doesn’t happen in France (I’d be surprised if it didn’t), nor did I say it’s rare (I wouldn’t know how common it is where it does happen). But it hasn’t happened to me nor to anyone I know, so by definition it can’t be systematic.

Can’t imagine a pancake without oil unless one is fighting a war or stranded in a remote cabin and has none.
The whole point of pancakes for Shrove Tuesday is to use up all the fat and oil in the house.

Yes for more than 1200 years when they used to give up dairy for lent. A shrove Tuesday football match has been played in England for 800 odd years and a pancake race for 600 odd years. Ælfric of Eynsham wrote about us eating pancakes in AD 1000.
 
We put eggs and milk in ours and fry them in oil. Then we load them up with butter and maple syrup to eat them, sometimes we add fruit and whipped cream.
Now i’m getting hungry so I better sign off.
