Br Robert Verrill was ordained priest a few months ago. He is an amazing man and a gifted preacher despite/because of his shyness. His vocation story explains how he felt called to be a Dominican because preaching openly didn’t come naturally to him. He is a fantastic priest and friar.

BTW, in our province at least you have to have been a Catholic for at least two years before starting any formal application process to the Dominicans, but it’s never too early to visit priories, speak to friars etc.

Steve, great to hear from you. It sounds from your posts that you’re around young adulthood. Wait till you get to be around 25 or so, and the world stops swirling so much and you have a better sense of things around you. . . then it becomes a lot easier to open your mouth, and once it gets going, sometimes it’s hard to stop it.

Two more tips from Captain America, citizen!
  1. “Know thyself”: really, if you know the TOPIC you are talking about, you should have confidence speaking about it. AND some enthusiasm, which counts for much (say, you should see Fr. Robert Barron’s youtube video on evangelizing).
  2. Intellectually recognize this Big Truth: AUDIENCES HATE TO BE BORED—so they are WANTING you to do a good job. . . not otherwise, not hoping you flop, since then they’ll have an unpleasant time. THEY WANT YOU TO DO WELL. It’s nice to know this, nice to have this in your pocket.

let God worry about the shyness, you worry about following his will and you will be fine. remember, god has a way of working around things that is perfect. remember moses stuttered and god made him a leader. so who are you to judge your abilities.

remember, it’s pride creeping in, an excuse-- “but oh, i do this therefore i’m not able.” remember god’s plan is so much more wise than shyness or what we could ever, ever do say think. perfection, it’s also perfection creeping in. saying-- “i lack this therefore i cannot”’ it’s satan’s lie. you are redeemed, you are made perfect in him, go in peace. this is the lord, and he loves clergy that is why you are under attack.

claim yourself your weaknesses in christ and move ahead, remember there is nothing any of us can do, shy or not, to earn him. it’s all god’s grace and he chose you for this vocation and that’s it.
