Sick dog, vet closed, what to feed?

She stopped throwing up sometime last night, and is not having as much “back door” issues. She has gone about twenty four hours without food and only minimal water. So, I am actually fixing her some rice right now. We are going to try this first and see how it goes and where we go from there. It is apparently the eating that is making her sick, cause after twenty four hours of not, her symptoms seem to be clearing some. She may just need a change of diet, and the vet can get us a good match. Or, she may just have eaten something outside, or has the flu. Thank you for your continued concern. She is just not her normal spunky, happy, tail wagging self. But, thankfully, she doesn’t appear to be in immediate danger anymore. Praise Jesus!

Ice cubes in the bowl instead of water keeps dogs from gorging and vomiting. At the vet tomorrow they may recommend ear cytologies and bloodwork, perhaps fecal flotation, fecal direct, fecal cytology. They may suggest radiology to search for a foreign body. Did you drop a blood pressure tablet or an antidepressant on the floor? Did a button fly off your shirt and you didn’t pick it up? Could your dog have eaten part of a blanket, a coin, a small toy? Rinse boiled chicken and boiled ground beef with water, in a collander, before serving. Check houseplants: that poinsettia that you may have bought for Christmas is very toxic to animals.

As your dog ages, s/he may begin to exhibit symptoms such as lameness, which could point to arthritis or Lyme Disease. Any lumps or bumps should be investigated. Check those teeth? Any tartar there? Bacterial infection can get into the bloodstream and wreak havoc with the internal organs. Coughing? Has the dog been on heartworm preventative? Overweight? Taxes the heart, raises cholesterol - just like it does in us. Fleas? Again, heartworm, as well as tapeworm, flea bite dermatitis, and general insanity-making uncomfortableness.

Here is what my Dad gives his dog when he has a sick tummy - plian white rice with plain yogurt. That settles it down.

Good news is she kept the rice down. We’re still keeping a close watch and eye on her. Hopefully we’ll get more insight on this tomorrow.

Yes. The “sick” one is now seemingly fine and eating almost normally again. We went and got ear drops for her infected ear, but are doubtful that caused the stomach problems, cause now the other dogs have it. I think it was a flu of sorts. It’s going to be a loooooong day. o Sorry I didn’t see this sooner!! I have a retired vet in the family, & I use him mercilessly for this kind of question).

I would suggest that you get rid of whatever it is that your animals have been eating, though. The possibility of contamination is very real…Better by far, to toss a whole bag of kibble than to risk continued suffering for your pets. (And, prosaically, but true, more vet bills).

I haven’t heard any updates. Have things settled back to normal?

Jenny had sickness and diorrheah a few weeks ago and when we called the vet we were told no food for 24 - 48 hours but to leave her plenty fresh water to drink. After her fast, she was only top get boiled chicken and rice for 4 - 5 days. We followed this advice and she was fine. Hope your doggy feels better soon!
