Also, consider whether or not you are used to humidity. If you are, you know what to expect.
Also something I had to learn the hard way, being from the West Coast: It does not cool off when it rains on the East Coast in summer. It is more like a steam sauna, with bath water running down the storm drains. This means that jackets are for evening and early morning. Other than that, carry an umbrella. (Not only useful for keeping off rain, but if the day is going to be very hot, it is a portable source of shade, too.)

Can anyone recommend any restaurants in DC or Philly? Preferably something not too touristy. Thank you.

Be aware that restaurants of ANY kind are a bit hard to find in the immediate area of the Mall. Something interestingly conspicuous to me was the almost total absence of fast food. There are some restaurants scattered around, however, but you kind of have to look for them.

Thanks, Rolltide. Do you know if there’s usually a long line at these places?
About two summers ago, we went to Philly to check it out. There were long line at both establishments. But not a long wait - they really push you through. 😉

Thanks again for all the suggestions. In Philly, we went to Geno’s Steaks, the Liberty Bell, the Franklin Institute, and Chinatown. In DC, we went to the Capitol, National Museums of Natural/American History, and the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. All in all, a fun trip. Really wish we had more time, though.

Guess you’ll just have to go back!! 🙂

Most of the museums and memorials are in the national mall, here’s a map to the attractions in the national mall: dcjourney.com/outdoors/nat-mall Almost all of the attractions are free in Washington DC.

Air and Space and Natural History are my favorite.
