It seems in Genises 17 that circumcision was supposed to go on forever but, later in Acts it seems that it wasn’t and in one of Pauls writings it seems that it is replaced by Baptism. I find this really confusing. Could anyone explain why in one place it says that it is perpetual, done away with, and replaced? Thanks and God bless.
 
Here are the covenant’s God made with his people. Note each has a sign and grows in size (marriage, a family, a tribe, a nation, a kingdom, the church):
  1. Adam and Eve (Genesis 1:26-2:3). Sign = Sabbath
  2. Noah and his family (Genesis 9:8-17). Sign = Rainbow
  3. Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 12:1-3; 17:1-14; 22:16-18). Sign = Circumcision
  4. Moses and the Israelites (Exodus 19:5-6; 3:4-10; 6:7). Sign = Passover
  5. David and the Kingdom of Israel (2 Samuel 7:8-19). Sign = Throne/Temple
  6. Jesus and the Church (Matthew 26:28: 16:17-19). Sign = Eucharist.

It is perpetual as a sign of belonging to God’s people, but not obligatory since the New Covenant. St. Paul makes it clear that there is nothing wrong in being circumcised but blasts those who would oblige yuu to be circumcised before you can become a Christian.

Montie, I think the title of your thread is the key to understanding.

Circumcision is the sign of the Covenant of Abraham. Are we bound by that Covenant? Are we children of Abraham or Children of God?

As Jesus says in the Last Supper, and as you hear the priest say during the Eucharistic Prayer, “This is my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting Covenant”. That’s the covenant that you and I are bound to.

Circumcision is a sign of the particular perpetual covenant God has made with the descendants of Jacob, with the Jews. The promises of this covenant are mainly concerned with temporal blessings (or curses).

Baptism is a sign of the better and universal perpetual covenant God has made with all peoples, with Jews and non-Jews alike. The promises of this covenant are mainly concerned with eternal blessings (or curses).
