I’m going to start a new tradition this year by reading outloud the story of the birth of Christ from the scriptures before our big family sits down to our dinner on Christmas Day.

Should I make the sign of the cross on my forehead, lips, and heart before I start…or is that gesture reserved for the Mass?

Very few gestures (if any), I would think, are “reserved” for the Mass. There is no reason not to incorporate that gesture (done before the reading/hearing of the Gospel) into a private or familial devotion.

Sounds like a wonderful Christmas Day tradition!
Just make sure you read Matthew. If you read Luke, your potatoes may be cold by the time you’re done. 😛

I can’t think of any gesture that is reserved for Mass.
