I’ve always wondered about this, but never really asked, so here I go. What is the purpose of the sign of peace during Mass?

I don’t know but I wish the shaking of hands would stop because it spreads infection especially during the flu season.

A few years ago a lady used to attend our church . She was middle aged and dressed in pink.
Occasionally during Mass she would carefully remove from a box about six small jars , then line them up on the seat ,get the brush and proceed to paint her fingernails. Only those who were closest to her could see what she was doing .I was waiting for the Sign of Peace and was the only one not to shake hands with her . People may have wondered if their hands felt a bit sticky , then shortly after it was time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Most people here receive the Eucharist in their hands …

I understand your concern…nothing like the person near you coughing through the mass with there hand over their mouth…or blowing their nose… and then wanting to offer you the sign of peace…and what of the Priest…Deacon…Eucharistic Minister offering the Body of Christ…where have their hands been?..where do we draw the line as we can’t live in bubbles…I think some parishes do stop shaking of hands during flu season…that is a good idea

@Daughter_of_The_King

It’s the sign of Love and Forgiveness

I wish they stop, the communion in hand too

I don’t see too much shaking hands anymore in the Churches I attend. It’s mostly holding the hand up and saying peace be with you. I’m pretty much non-verbal so I just mumble peace.
If someone extends their hand I have no problem shaking it. Some on here say they wish the Church would do away with the peace sign altogether. I don’t. It’s a chance to have at least some interaction and eye contact with fellow parishioners

I prefer a head nod along with the words, but I will accept someone’s hand if offered. What I don’t like is the hippy-dippy peace sign being flashed around.

Actually, that helps curb the spread of germs.
yes,but don’t you think hands cause a lot of germs and infections, throughout the day we touch many things, other people then touch these things and so on

Carry hand sanitizer in your purse or pocket and use it after shaking hands. Not really that hard. You are more likely to get sick from the airborne germs just being around the people that are coughing and sneezing. Sick people should just stay home. Unfortunately many don’t.

I’m a kindergarten teacher. Since we started keeping hand sanitizer around, I haven’t been sick. It’s been years now.

As long as you use it properly, hand sanitizer works very well.

Once again—hand sanitizer. Most parishes have it for anyone distributing communion anyway. If you use it after the sign of peace (before communion) and receive in the hand, very small chance of getting sick. Much more likely to get sick from the air we share.

Yea,thanks, but i don’t,think all use it, regularly, or remember to do so.I personally prefer, to receive holy Communion on the tongue.

Personally I do as well and if I’m carrying babies I kind of have to. I do see the benefits of receiving in the hand during flu season though.

What! How awful. I ask my wife to get as far away from me in the house as she can when she paints her nails. The fumes are awful, linger and bother me.

This is why I don’t like the hand shaking. After all the hand shaking people, understandably, pull out hand sanitizer. The smell bothers me and catches my attention drawing me out of a religious experience. Of course if they actually used incense then that might drown out the smell of the hand sanitizer.

It is unfortunate that many of us are sensitive to smells. I really never was until I was pregnant. The first sign for me was always a very clear sense of smell and extreme discomfort because of that. I do sympathize with you.

If sick people just stayed home it wouldn’t be so hard on the healthy ones and it would prevent the spread of germs.

It’s based on Matthew 5:23-24
That is a common misunderstanding, but that is not what it is based on. Matthew 5 requires that the seeking of reconciliation happen BEFORE the Offetory, not after the Eucharist is confected

Redemptionis Sacramentum addresses the difference

[71]The practice of the Roman Rite is to be maintained according to which the peace is extended shortly before Holy Communion. For according to the tradition of the Roman Rite, this practice does not have the connotation either of reconciliation or of a remission of sins, but instead signifies peace, communion and charity before the reception of the Most Holy Eucharist. It is rather the Penitential Act to be carried out at the beginning of Mass (especially in its first form) which has the character of reconciliation among brothers and sisters.
