What does the church say about not shaking hands at the sign of the peace? Is it improper not to shake hands?

Not sure what the Church teaches, but it is definitely an established practice to shake hands (or hug/kiss) at the sign of peace. Why would you not want to participate?

General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), par. 56b.
The Rite of Peace
82. The Rite of Peace follows, by which the Church asks for peace and unity for herself and for the whole human family, and the faithful express to each other their ecclesial communion and mutual charity before communicating in the Sacrament.

As for the sign of peace to be given, the manner is to be established by Conferences of Bishops in accordance with the culture and customs of the peoples. It is, however, appropriate that each person offer the sign of peace only to those who are nearest and in a sober manner. …
The specific object of the adaptation invited in n. 82 is the nature of the gesture for the exchange of peace. As far as I can tell, the USCCB has not specified the nature of the gesture in any of its approved adaptations.

I dont see why people have such a problem with the sign of peace. I think it is a very nice part of the Mass. If someone comes to Church that is I’ll then I would understand them not wanting to shake hands. I’m not trying to be smart or to start a fight here but I dont understand why people struggle with something as simple as shaking hands and wishing one the peace of Christ.

During flu and cold season I and my two Catholic kids turn and say “peace be with you”…we do not shake hands…many people just do not wash their hands or are ill.

But outside of this short time of year…yeah we chake hands and even hug and kiss a few people we know rather well!
