St. Cyril of Jerusalem (b.315, d. 386) describes the “kiss of peace” in his 5th mystagogical lecture. It is part of his detailed description of the celebration of the Mass. He says that it is a way of indicating that you wholeheartedly forgive that person (and everyone else in the church) of anything they did to offend you.I’ve seen it omitted and no one seemed to care. It is totally unnecessary and is obviously just something they came up with in the attempt to re-create what they imagined happned at some of the primitive masses, nothing more and nothing less.
