A little devil’s advocate here, if you will.

I always read on here that Protestants are always welcome to Mass, they just need to follow along and show etiquette at the service.

If I’m reading your post properly, are you saying it’s a one way street? Protestants may come to Mass, but must follow etiquette for the Mass but if a Catholic goes to a Protestant service they don’t have to follow the same advisement?

I personally don’t care (and the situation at hand isn’t poor etiquette at most any protestant church), but that’s how you’re coming off. Do as I say in my house and I’ll do as I like in yours.
Well maybe you should care. There is only one Truth…you should be seeking that. Catholics should not be attending protestant communities services anyway.

Jesus Christ is the Way, The Truth and the Life.
Jesus Christ founded the Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church is the pillar and foundation of Truth.

Jesus didn’t follow etiquette and chase after those former disciples who saw the Eucharist as a hard saying and could not listen to it.

Anyway I think this is a good guideline to follow…
In the first place a Catholic has no business attending Protestant church services even occasionally. To participate in a heretical worship service and especially a communion service can be sinful for a Catholic because such an act is an affirmation of what we believe to be untrue. To attend an ecumenical service or a wedding or baptism is allowed, but Catholics are not allowed to attend such churches for the main reason of worship. Now if there are no Catholic churches in the vicinity on a Sunday, Catholics are allowed to participate in the Liturgy of Churches whose clergy are validly ordained such as the Eastern Orthodox Churches—including the reception of the Eucharist. Although we consider them to be in schism (not in union with the Pope) with the Catholic Church, such Churches are not heretical and share our basic beliefs.

BTW, what I meant by “I don’t care” is that I found that using the sign of the cross wasn’t in bad etiquette, IMHO.

Other than that…wow, just…wow.

This is so sad…and here I thought Protestants were guilty of “just Jesus and me.”

Your comment peaked my interest so I read the post you quoted.

But my thought would be, rather than “This is so sad” I’d just say the Internet as a whole is “so sad”.

Yes, but it also gives me opportunity to realize that there are good people out there too and that changes are happening for the better. Not all is lost!

Agreed. It should never be said that there are no good people on the Internet. 🙂

I know you are a good man so I will ask you a question. This thread is about crossing oneself in a Protestant church. What is the significance of crossing oneself? Is it just a visual identification of being a Christian or is there some deeper element ? Thought I would ask rather than google,

Deeper than just identification. Like kneeling.

A few weeks ago, my aunt passed away. Her memorial service was held in a Baptist church because she was a Baptist. During the service, the pastor made a few critical comments about Catholicism (ex: went on a rant about purgatory) which I found very inappropriate for a memorial service to begin with, but especially because her husband of 20 years is a Catholic? That’s another story though.

Anyway, when we would pray during the service I’d make the sign of the cross because I do that every time I pray. This pastor gave me an odd look, as I was sitting in the front row. I was wondering if this is considered inappropriate or disrespectful at a Protestant service? I don’t frequent Protestant services (this was actually my 2nd time ever attending one) but I just wondered what the etiquette was as far as that is concerened. Thank you!
Be happy making the Sign of the Cross, you are giving witness to the Catholic faith!

Matthew 5:10-12

10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake:
12 Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
