I have recently come into the Church, bringing me great joy and my family great distress. At family meals someone often prays for everyone, and in public we pray to ourselves. Any obviously Catholic gesture stirs things up and causes tears and upset, so I often say grace by myself just before joining the group meal.
I am unsure as to what the Church teaches about the importance of making the sign of the cross when we say grace at meals. I know we can say little prayers throughout the day without necessarily including this gesture, but is it a sin to pray without the sign? And if we still invoke the Trinity in our silent prayer? Any information on what the Church teaches on this topic would be greatly appreciated!
