I have recently come into the Church, bringing me great joy and my family great distress. At family meals someone often prays for everyone, and in public we pray to ourselves. Any obviously Catholic gesture stirs things up and causes tears and upset, so I often say grace by myself just before joining the group meal.
I am unsure as to what the Church teaches about the importance of making the sign of the cross when we say grace at meals. I know we can say little prayers throughout the day without necessarily including this gesture, but is it a sin to pray without the sign? And if we still invoke the Trinity in our silent prayer? Any information on what the Church teaches on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Making the sign of the cross before you pray when saying grace is not required by the Church. If making the sign of the cross before praying at meals causes tears and family grief then praying silently to yourself is just fine.

God Bless.

It isn’t a sin to not make the sign of the cross before or after praying, nothing wrong with praying in silence away from those who are easily offended.

It’s fine to pray with them. We can make the sign of the Cross or not. It’s really up to you. It’s not a sin.
It will probably take your family time to realise you are now Catholic and serious about it.

Be patient with them and exercise Catholic Charity. Let God shine through you by your resolve and in your imitation of Christ.

I pray for you. 🙏🕊️

This would be a great question for your Priest.

You can ask the Our Lord to bless your food and this can be done in silence, I would do this just before eating.

Do it anyway! It’s a Christian symbol right?

My family doesn’t pray, so when we are together I say my prayers silently, and I never make the sign of the cross. Likewise, when I’m eating with coworkers or out with friends.

Don’t worry about it. Pray with your heart.
