Dear Friends,

What is the significance of the water in the mixing of water and wine to become the Most Precious Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ ?

Thanks,

Brad

When the centurion pierced Jesus’ side with the lance, blood and water flowed forth at the Crucifixion.

This is commemorated in the Vidi Aquam chant which is sung on Easter Sunday

I saw water flowing forth from the temple,
From the right side, Alleluia
And all those to whom that water came,
They were saved, Alleluia, Alleluia. (I’m doing this from memory so I may not have the words exactly).

So it symbolizes both Jesus’ sacrifice and our baptisms.

It has several meanings:

Water and Blood flowed from the side of Christ.

It represents Christ’s humanity and Divinity

It was a practical thing the Jews did because of the high alcohol wine used.

Thank you for your replies.

Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.

Blood is for His Human state.
Water from His Divine state. As a symbol of purity.

The priest says:

“By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the Divinity of Christ, Who humbled Himself to share in our humanity.”
