This Sunday, July 31, the TLM parish invited a priest to celebrate the Dominican Rite. I got curious and researched on the differences but to no avail, I could see little material which could make sense.

So what are the variations between the two?

When I visited Anchorage, Alaska, I wanted to find a Latin Mass to attend; they didn’t have one, but they did have the Dominican Rite. I definitely can’t adequately answer your question - but the only thing that I remember noticing that was different between a Roman Rite (Extraordinary Form) Mass and a Dominican Rite Mass was that they did some sort of Offertory at the beginning of Mass, and that they prayers at the foot of the alter were a little bit different. Otherwise, I didn’t notice anything. I’m sure there were probably a few other minor differences, but I had heard before that there isn’t much difference between the two. I wanted to compare side by side the texts for the Mass to see if there are many more differences but never got around to searching.

From the link provided: Distinctive Marks of the Dominican Rite
The celebrant in the Dominican Rite wears the amice over his head until the beginning of Mass, and prepares the chalice as soon as he reaches the altar.

This brings back memories from over seventy years ago when a Dominican priest was in our parish for a ‘special mission’ as it was called. I recall Sister Anna instructing the older boys who would be serving his Mass that the wine and water were prepared before the prayers at the foot of the altar. I was still memorizing the Mass prayers and just starting to serve so was not involved. .

It is closer to the Latin 1962 Missal. There are different prayers and different rubrics.

Examples:
The chalice is prepared before mass (as in the eastern Catholic Divine Liturgy).
During the Gloria the chalice is brought to the altar in procession.
The ministers stand in different positions than in the Latin rite.
When singing of the Preface the ministers are incensed.
The priest wears the amice on his head before the beginning of Mass.
The Confiteor is a shorter Dominican version.

Pretty good description of the “major” differences, Vico.

We had the Dominican low Mass celebrated once a month at our old OF parish. This lasted for 3 years until the Dominican priest was transferred to be the Rector at the Cathedral in Anchorage.

I really admire the Dominicans that try to celebrate their old Mass. And yes, it is very similar to the Mass of 1962. It is gaining in popularity again. It is celebrated monthly at Holy Rosary, in Portland, Oregon. A Dominican Solemn High Mass is a thing of beauty. 👍
