I’m getting married in less than three weeks and I seem to remember people signing the civil marriage certificate during the nuptial mass. Is this typical? Required? Not supposed to be done? Given the recent SCOTUS decision, I would rather sign it after the mass in order to draw a distinction between the actual definition of marriage as witnessed to by the Church and the redefinition assigned to it by the secular authorities.

I’ve not seen that in a Catholic wedding, but it’s always possible that someone along the way thought it was a good idea.
Typically the license is signed before the wedding. I usually have the bride and groom sign the license at the rehearsal and then I hold off on signing it until after the wedding. If the bride or groom don’t show up it can simply be torn up.
There is nothing in the liturgy for a wedding that would call for or permit signing paperwork at any point during the wedding. So there is no reason that a Catholic wedding should include this additional element.
