My adult daughter, through a co-worker, is interested in the Sikh Religion. Apparently, they believe in 1 God and 12 Gurus similar to Disciples?

What can anyone tell me about Sikh?

Karma doesn’t necessarily infer reincarnation. It just means that they feel the ‘universe’ balances itself. If you do evil, the ‘universe’ does evil back to you. That is my understanding of Karma.

It’s my understanding that the gurus accept karma and reincarnation as facts of existence, as the other Indian/Oriental schools of thought do. I’m not sure, however, in what way karma relates to reincarnation in Sikh teaching.
 
They are a syncretic blend of Islam and Hinduism with their own unique flourishes which they developed.
 
Find out if she is being influenced by a cult. Is it called RSSB? Satsang Beas? If she were in India, her interest might be one thing; but over here it is another. Find out what appeals to her about Sikhism: is it the lack of morals and rules or is it the morals and rules? They have some tight rules but who is their magisterium? It could all change tomorrow. Young people from our country frequently try to escape the rules of their own religion, only to take on those of another religion, less grounded in a solid theology.

If they talk about saints, it’s not the Catholic saints although they throw in a few of ours to confuse things. If they have references to Christ, He is just considered one of the many “ascended masters”. They are kind of “mystic”-based which means you can get pretty lost in your own ideas and meditation.

Read about Sikhism. Also Google “Sikhism and Satsang Beas”. This is a very popular group for young people who are curious, who like something exotic, and yet feel a sort of familiarity with their Western references. There is a lot of meditation. No alcohol or drugs. Clean living. Marriage centered. Lots of good ideas mixed in with some strange ones. Add a few yogis, a few amazing stories. Not Christ-centered. kind of an amalgam.

Try to learn more about it than her.
 
We live in a very religiously diverse area. Many of her co-workers where born in other countries. This young man who is very open & talkative about his faith is a Sikh (he pronouces it “sick”) born in India & moved to the U.S. when he was young. I will continue to look into it. It seems alot like Islam?

Ive lived in the midst of Sikhs and it was only until I came to CAF that I find they use Islam as part of their Faith. Very fascinating…:o

By one God I don’t know if they mean God in the sense we do. I asked a sikh this myself and they had no concept of God being a thinking entity or even to define who or what God is.

Almost without exception every Sikh I have come in contact with has been cheerful, friendly, polite and hard working. Looking at it from the outside their religion certainly seems to have something going for it.
