What are your opinions towards Catholic who hide their faith from Family and Nation-wide media/comunity persecution?

It depends on the situation. If there is legitimate fear of physical persecution, I admire them for even being Catholic. If it is economical persecution or being ostracized, I understand that, too. If they just don’t like it and can’t do much about it, then that’s their choice. Again, I don’t know what the culture in Malaysia is like. What kind of persecution are you speaking of?

never been in that situation so couldn’t answer it

Most people I know, know I go to church etc. I don’t rub it in or anything but they know besides which if they read the small print of the local newspaper they would definately know because I am in there whenver I Serve.

I am very unlikely to be in a situation where my life was threatend by my faith being public and I would like to say I be still open about it. I had thought about this at various times when first heard about Christians ‘today’ being persecuted for their faith. I would like to think I be strong enough to be just me and come what may but was ever in that situation self preservation may well take over perhaps but there again mayn’t depending on my mood that day. Who knows. We are all different and respond to pressure differently. So my answer is that I do not think about those who stay silent of their faith for fear and actual persecution and death. We don’t know what its like till we are in that situation.

The choice between living and denying God or open to God and dying. I know and hope I be strong enough to believe that I stick to my believe and willingly die if it came to that or would I bottle. What ever I know that God will see and understand the full picture and still loves us but the challenge of being Christian in reality could be too great at such times for people. I hope I would be able to be still public about it.😃 that is my deepest aim if ever got into such like situation having had time to really think about it. Hopefully I would die for God in that context.

My opinion is they need to educate themselves more on the Catholic Faith

If you are talking about Malaysia, Muslims are a 61% majority. Muslim converts to Christianity have been harassed, received death threats, and some have died. I can understand why they would do this. 😦

Died!?
I bet the media hid it very well.
The problem with the “silent” catholic/christian is they are "silent"ly or discreetly persecuted.

Look from the news and article below;

Just in time for the Christmas holiday season: more Malaysian Muslim paranoia regarding supposed plots to convert Muslims

Malaysian Monarch: Let me remind JAIS to be discreet in its actions and approaches so that Muslims who have began distancing themselves from Islam will… return to the fold and repent,” he added.

Look at the “…” triple dot, I was sure it was a death threat in the open. Things may look calm on the outside. But the inside, I can only comment “…”.
Kinda reminded me of Kakure Kirishitan, the early Japanese Silent Christian.

It’s like Convert VS Kings now…

So you are a convert from an otherwise Muslim family?

In that case I suggest you are careful. It also depends on how old you are and how independent you are. Take it easy. You are not obliged to pray in public and read the Bible while people are watching. It is ok to be discreet about it in difficult circumstances.

Do you have support, other Catholics who can help you on your faith journey? From what I’ve experienced here, Christians stick together and help one another. I know it doesn’t solve the problem of Muslim violence towards converts but any kind of support is good.

Yes.

19 y/o. Studying at college now. I stop at the first semester saying wanted to move to nearer college, trying to buy time finding ways to study abroad. My high school exam results are not perfect, but good enough to skip diploma and take foundation study straight for degree. I looked high and low for the opportunity such as scholarship, sponsor or anything, still finding.

I admit I was very high-profile when I was in high-school 4 years ago that someone “invented” an “imaginary group” of muslim apostate. As far as I know, there’s only me in my school days, suddenly turns into a group more than 10 people in my school, which is obviously religion turned into political to get votes.

I was stressed, I studied the bible and catholic teaching by myself, and can’t study right. I gain weight and suddenly my blood pressure increase when checked at the hospital.

I guess I’m on the wrong part of the earth. They even questioned my faith and stop communicating, treating me no different than the muslims. Sometimes I wonder if they are genuine Catholic/Christian or pretender who was really chinese/indian muslim. Directly contact the parish and priest was a no-no and suicidal move.

Everytime I see a fast passing shadow, I feel that I’ve been forgetting more and more.
I just want to carry on my mini-exodus plan and flee.

and we take our faith so easily and many are afraid of telling others because of a little jeering that is real enough at the time but in comparison rather than real pesecution. I am sorry.
You can do everything in private even seeing a Catholic Priest in private. He will not tell on you at all. You can certainly pray to God in the private of your heart and don’t even need to use words because he knows our words and what we need so prayer can be very quiet and no one will know but God will know.

I hope you get to achieve your plan to freedom.

Hi Akka,

I am sorry to hear about the persecution you must bear, simply because of the country you were born in 😦

Could this be any good - Malaysia Campus Crusade for Christ - they might be able to offer advice? mccc.org.my/index.htm

And this shows you aren’t alone in your silence - a fellow Malay Christian convert shares her story news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/crossing_continents/6150340.stm

Could you look into international scholarships so you could study abroad?

Thank you for your reply and links.
I try to find the scholarship.

I don’t walk around with a name tag saying I’m an Opus Dei cooperator. I’m proud to admit my affiliation if asked, but I simply let my actions broadcast my positive message of Catholicism. Religion and politics are best discussed at home, or in very controlled settings.
