I wonder if dreams are just dreams. Over the past week I have had several religiously themed dreams, no doubt fueled by my current preoccupation with reading the Bible. I know they are just dreams, and dreams are such silly things, but I wonder if there is meaning in them. If not a message of God, perhaps just a message to myself, and so here they are, I hope that you can make some kind of sense of them.

Dream 1
Looking down, I notice that I am wearing a belt. Attached to this belt are loops of steel. For each loop there is an attached chain. These chains lead out to people that I know and care about. There is a chain for my parents and family, a chain for my church, a chain for my job, a chain for my friends, and a chain connected to my boyfriend. The chains are heavy but I don’t mind. Then a well dressed man comes to me with an axe and breaks the chains one by one. With each broken chain, I feel emptier and more alone. And then I am alone, all the chains are broken and I weep. Another man comes to me, this one dressed in rags with his belly growling. He asks me for some food and I take him into my house and feed him. We pray together and then he asks to wash, so I show him to the bathroom. He tells me, “I am weak my friend, would you help a poor man to wash his hair?” And so I help him. As the water washes away the dirt and stink more and more of him shine through until I recognize him for who he is, Christ Jesus. And then he tells me, “Because of your compassion, I will return to you seven fold what you have lost, but only if you choose me and walk the path along the way to the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Dream 2
A man wakes me from a nap on his sofa. The man looks to be Jewish or Arabic. He seems friendly enough. He says to me, “Dinner is ready.” And so I get up and head to the dining room. I sit and I noticed that there were far more plates than there were guest. He looks about the table and says, “We have much to eat and to drink, go out into the streets and bring to me guests, the rich and the poor, so that they may eat and make merry.” And so we go out into the street and bring to him all matter of people. When we are seated, we notice that there are still empty seats and he looks out at them in sadness. Then he says as he breaks the bread, “Take this bread and eat of it, and by eating of it remember me. Bring more to the lords table, so that they may eat of it and live forever.” We eat the bread and the food offered. Then he takes out a wine goblet and fills it, “Also take this drink, and in so doing you will have partaken of the bread and the wine; blood of my blood, flesh of my flesh. Go now into the world and bring more to the Lord’s Table, so that they may eat and drink and live forever.”

Dream 3
I am walking down the street and a lady meets me at the entrance of her house. She invites me in and I follow her. We pray together and talk of our lives. I am quickly wowed by her stories of her simple life of prayer and service to others. And we break bread as she says, “He knows you and he sends me in his stead, so that you may know that he is the Master of all things. My name is Gertrude and he knows your name.” I’m dumbfounded and am speechless. And she says, “The Lord is drawing near, go out in your humbleness and bring to the Lords table as many as you find, so that they may eat with him and live forever.” I tell her I am not ready and she laughs, “No one is ready these days, but doesn’t He say to be ready? Doesn’t he say to be prepared when he returns?” I nod yes, and she adds, “Make straight the path for others and pray often, for the kingdom of heaven draws near and he will have his number.”

All though my life I have had weird dreams such as these and I will more than likely have more. I think they are just the product of my over active imagination. But, I dunno. What do you think?

Maybe not. They sound like they make sense.

Last night I had a dream I was going somewhere and trying to pack our things. My baby had on a wet shirt. I put the baby in the oven to dry his shirt and was worried that he might get hurt, but everyone said it wouldn’t hurt him.

Tracing the dream, I realized I read a book written by a mortician who had to cremate a year old baby who had died of heart problems.

Maybe you could trace your dreams to something you read or did when awake.

When we are awake we filter what we experience into three categories. We then place our experiences on one of three shelves in our belief system. One shelf is for what we believe to be true, shelf two is for items that we do not know whether they are valid or not and shelf three is for what we believe to be not true.

These shelves are not static. As we learn or experience more things we move the items from one shelf to another based upon our new information on these topics.

But when we dream there are no filters. In dreams we accept the experience without arguement or validation. So therefore, in dreams, we can do things that we could never do in our waking life

It is for this reason that I believe God uses our dreams to persuade us to do things that we might argue against if we were told His expectations when we were awake.

Your dreams are far from silly. They give very practical lessons as to how we are to live our lives as ambassadors of love for God.

In Dream 1 you are chained to beliefs that seem to obstruct the compassonate nature God gave you and this results in you living a more selfish life. The well dressed man could be either an angelic or human ambassador that God has sent you to free you from your chains that you might be free to release your compassionate nature. That freeing act brings about your freedom and thus permits you to be compassionate, and thus to be able to see Jesus (God) in everyone no matter what their physical condition at the outset.

Dream 2
Seems to speak of your trust in God and in your belief that we must eat of His body and drink of His blood if we are to have eternal life. You have known this but have not been reciving Holy Communion as you shoul;d but more importantly you have not been sharing the knowledge of this truth with others. Sharing not only in the reception of God’s graces but sharing the knowledge of God’s graces with others is what God wants us all to do.

Dream 3
In this dream Saint Gertrude explains the meaning of the first two dreams. She even speaks of your lack of faith in believing in your ablity to do this. Read about the life of Saint Gertrude. It will help you.

Thank you for sharing.

I know I haven’t been receiving the Eucharist, because I haven’t been baptized. I watch as others take in the body and blood of Christ and I find joy in their reception. I am just waiting on the day that I too may receive it.

I will have to read more about her. I didn’t even know who she was until the dream, I had to do a little research to find out.
