  1. I recently heard that a terrorist organization had been thinking of blowing up the vatican – pope, cardinals, and all… what would happen to the church then? Is there a “doomsday” plan where the remaining bishops in the world would get together and vote on a new Pope?
  2. Could a Pope denounce the idea or rather further define the idea of infalibility – i.e. thinking of future talks with EO.
  3. Could a Pope further define Immaculate Conception so that it was defined in a way more compatible with EO?

The cardinals do not all live in Vatican City. If an attack killed the pope, there would be a conclave to elect a new pope.

These are infallible dogmas. The Pope cannot “denounce” either of them. Nor could he “define” them in any way that is incompatible with the infallible statements. If any further definition or explanation maintains the integrity of the dogma, then certainly it would be fine to do so.

The Pope does not have the authority to denounce papal infallibility if he did that he would simply become a heretic just like any other Catholics who was to do so.

You’re right, they are silly questions.

No question is silly if it’s asked with a real desire to know, and especially when it’s a desire to understand properly the workings of our Church.

Thank you for the reminder. Do you have any reply
for him now? Especially about that monstruous terrorist?..
I am not the one who needs clarification , nor fighting.
Peace.

According to Cardinal Kasper who heads the ecumenical efforts says,
  • “We are increasingly conscious of the fact that an Orthodox Church (EO Church) does not really exist,”
  • "At the present stage, it does not seem that Constantinople is yet capable of integrating the different autocephalous Orthodox Churches;
  • there are doubts about its primacy of honor, especially in Moscow."

Maybe this will change someday. But until THEY are one, you have to get agreement with each one individually.

Did you ever notice that the “silly” questions on Yahoo! Q&A seem to attract a lot more attention and responses than the more serious issue-oriented questions?

Two reasons. Laity like answering the easy questions (like me =]). The silly questions are also easier to troll and ridicule the beliefs of others, this certainly happens on Yahoo Answers.

-Prophecy

I agree with you about the first and second reasons.
But let me add the third: which is to erase CAF reminder about
posting so we go for easy answers.

I thought Ike and Advocatus had already done a good job of answering his questions. Personally, I trust God to look out for His Church; nothing will happen to it that is not within His permissive will.

Always love the verse (Mt. 16:18) where He reminds us it’s His Church –
*“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church”, *
– and promises its endurance:
*“and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.” *

:blessyou:

I read a book with someone speculating that in such a case, it might be reverted to the people of Rome to choose their Bishop rather than the world’s Bishops. There isn’t any historical precedent to allow the Bishops to do it (Paul VI speculated on it but nothing came out of it), but there is historical precedent to allow the people of Rome to do it (that was how it was done in the early days). It would be interesting to see who would decide on how to proceed. Nobody has the authority to do it.

I did my senior thesis on Conclaves; the rules try to cover as much ground as it can. You’d think they would try to define what would happen if the Cardinal electors were all incapacitated, but it hasn’t been defined. Unless, that is, a Pope put it in a confidential document.
The cardinals do not all live in Vatican City. If an attack killed the pope, there would be a conclave to elect a new pope.
While they don’t all live in the Vatican, it’s still a possibility.

All the Cardinal electors are gathered for the Conclave. They will all be in a small are of land, and all concentrated in either the Saint Martha hotel or the Sistine Chapel. If terrorists could manage to overcome all the security, the Cardinals would not be hard to find, especially given all the media coverage. The more sophisticated weapons that terrorists get their hands on, the more possible it becomes.

But I guess it’s about as likely as having the same sort of attack on the president or on Congress, both of whom are protected by security.

Is there a “doomsday” plan where the remaining bishops in the world would get together and vote on a new Pope?
I don’t know if there is a plan, but God forbid, if this happened, that would be the response.

I would think the only way to jeopardize apostolic succession would be for every bishop in the world to die without ordaining a successor.

I wonder if there is a canon that deals with this practically impossible “doomsday possibility”.

A related scenario I have been wondering on is if all of the Diocese of Rome began a smoking crater (or otherwise uninhabitable), what would happen to the papacy as an office? My theory is that the Diocese of Rome would become a titular see, and the Pope could live anywhere he chose (although the Curial offices would prudentially find some permanent home).
