Silly Rosary Question: Rope or Chain?

Silly question, but seemingly important on an investment level…

I’ve had some bad luck in the past with rosaries falling apart, links going missing, etc. I’m in the market for a new rosary. While I would love to customize my own design via webshops that offer such services, I for one feel that such an item is hardly appealling to one’s sense of poverty; however, I am wondering if a sterling chain might hold together better and longer than a piece of cord.

What do you think? Which would hold together better and would be the better, long-lasting investment?

(My customized design, which includes beads on a sterling chain would cost me approx. $115, one made with cord approx. $67; then of course there’s cheaper, non-customized options which serve the same purpose.)

I carry my Rosary with me all the time, and I’ve definitely had the best luck with a cord rather than a chain. I have a $5 wood/cord rosary from a church gift shop, and it’s lasted for years. Make sure the cord is really pliable. I had another cord Rosary that had a sort of stiff cord, and it broke. All that said, I think the chain Rosaries are much prettier, and I sort of want a custom one too.

I use my cord and plastic bead one for my Daily Rosary, and the chain one for more special occasions, or when I’m praying the Rosary at church. I think I should get a new cord and bead rosary, though - one that doesn’t have a stack of beads right against each other. I have a smaller one, but it’s so lightweight, that I can’t really use one hand to move through the beads.

Have you thought about a ladder rosary? (One where the beads are connected between two chains, like the rungs of a ladder.) I have one of these, and it has held up beautifully for years. You can also think of it as part of your ladder to heaven!

Here’s my :twocents: I think it’s perfectly fine for you to invest in a good Rosary. Get one that will last you a lifetime, and be sure to thank God for the “gift”. I think you would only have to worry about your sense of poverty… if you had to have a different Rosary, for each season (or day of the week, or whatever)… etc. That would be silly, and wasteful.

I prefer cord rosaries rather than those with metal links, last longer, can be carried in a pocket with less chance of breaking, don’t get as tangled. mine from the Franciscans is over 20 yrs old and still going strong, also carved corpus on the cross rather than attached metal, means it will never fall off. I have a dozen where the welded corpus has fallen off.

I have and prefer a chain rosary. However, I use to make rosaries and so I know how to repair it, when it has come apart.

I don’t carry a chain rosary in my pocket, because I know I’ll end up destroying it. Instead, I carry a ring, finger rosary which has 1 decade, which I use when I take my lunchtime walk.

How about stainless steel chain? Also, maybe you could ask around your diocese to find a Rosary Guild. Those people would love to make your Rosary It’ll probably cost less too

As for what lasts longer, i can’t really say
