Luke 2: 35 And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.

Catholics and Protestants Tell me in your own words why did Virgin Mary have to suffer a sword in Her heart/soul?

Catholic and Protestants: Who are the “Many Hearts”, whom Simeon or actually I should say the “Holy Spirit” because it is the Holy Spirit doing the speaking through Simeon referring to?..Who are the “Many Hearts”?

Are we the “Many Hearts” Mary had to suffer a sword for, that “Thoughts may be revealed”?

“Many Hearts” must be us, if not, who then? the Martians form planet Mars…lol

The Son shares the flesh of His Mother, and He is ever-bound to Her and She is ever-bound to Him.

All His pain is Her pain. All His joy is Her joy. All His love is Her love.

Dear Ufa…

At the presentation, where Joseph and Mary presented to God what was given them, the point was simple Jesus would lead and divide his people, Mary would suffer, hearts would be convicted. But do not miss the big one, Simeon had prayed constantly so that when his savior was revealed to him, he did not miss it. He wasn’t in constant study, he was in constant prayer. Yours in Christ EMC

Mary was with the Lord, not saved or transformed or redeemed, but “full of grace”.

I understand it thus but please don’t take my opinon for offical Catholic teaching. Mary suffered a sword in her heart by watching the persecution and crucifixion of her Son our Lord Jesus Christ. That many hearts and thoughts will be revealed is in reference to her divine intercession. This ability to intercede on our behalf has nothing to do with her personally but has to do with the fact that God made her “Full of Grace”. She has been given the ability to distribute graces. However, the Blessed Mother never distributes graces contrary to the divine will. Which also we can deduce from her saying to the Lord “let it be done to me according to thy will”. She has been given a special placing and grace by God to hear our prayers and intercede on our behalf, it’s really that simple.

Hey there Jimmy,

You are so right in saying the above. How blest are we that Jesus Christ on the Cross gave us Virgin Mary to be Our Mother too.

Edward, thanks for replying back… But tell me why were you the only Protestant that had a comment to say, that Mary had to suffer for us as well, where are the other Protestants, and why have they, (or have you not) not responded?

But do not miss this bigger one lol Not only did Simeon pray constantly and steadily he had the Holy Spirit in him, actually it was the Holy Spirit that has made this known to us, about his Spouse Mary, that she had to suffer a sword for each and every one of us.

Where are all the other Protestants out there I would like to hear from you, regarding what Simeon filled with the Holy Spirit have to say about Mary?

From the Haydocks Catholic Bible Commentary - Ver. 35. And thy own soul a sword shall pierce. These words, which figuratively express the grief of the blessed Virgin mother, when present at the death of her Son, are to be taken by way of a parenthesis. — That out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed, and these are to be joined with what went before; to wit, that child shall be a sign of contradiction, set unto the fall and resurrection of many, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed and disclosed; when some shall believe, and others remain in their obstinacy. (Witham) — Ven. Bede, and many others, understand this of the sharp sorrow, which wounded the soul of the blessed Virgin Mary, at the time of Christ’s passion. (Barradius) — Carthusianus [Denis the Carthusian?] and Jansenius explain this passage as follows: Behold, this child is placed for a sign that shall be contradicted, which as a sword of most poignant grief will pierce thy soul, O Virgin! But Christ shall be contradicted, that the thoughts of the Jews may be revealed from many hearts, and it may appear who among them are good, and who are wicked and hypocrites. (Barradius)
