Having read a book recently based on the legend of Joseph of Aramethea following the crucifixion, I was praying the Stations of the Cross and began to meditate on some of the other personalities, particularly Simon of Cyrene. Scripture says very little about him, but I wondered if anyone here knows of any legends or Church teachings which have sprung up around this stranger who helped carry our Lord’s cross on the way to Calvary?
I wonder if he was just a random stranger, a Jew in town for the Passover, a follower of Christ, or someone watching the scene the way people look at a car accident in macabre interest. Even if he had never heard of Jesus, how did it affect him to be that close to our Lord, to mix sweat and blood as they carried the burden of the cross. Did Jesus speak to him? Was he changed forevermore?
I tried to “Google” him, but found no traditions that speak of the man who bore the cross with Jesus. So I’m turning to the experts here.
Thanks in advance for sharing any knowledge or speculation.
