If I where to purchase an item containing a. Holy Relic (of any class) who would the sin of Simony be with, if at all? Does that sin lie with me, or the Vendor of the relic being sold? Also if the relic where otherwise going to be destroyed or disposed of irresponsibly, is it still a Sin to offer to purchase the relic to keep it in existence and owned in a responsible way?

I’m interested in purchasing an item which contains a relic, the vendor has stated the relic is free but the Item that contains it is for sale. It is rather a hight price though and I feel perhaps the actual Relic is the reason it is so high a price. The item seems to be of little value itself, where it not for what is inside of it, despite the vendors endorsement to the contrary. I also think some vendors of such items may not be Catholics and wouldn’t really take into account the Sin of Simony at all, on their part.

What is a well intentioned Catholic to do in such cases?

One has to be very careful because like everything else in life many try to profit from our gullibility. So with that in mind, what Relic? how can it be proven that it is authentic. Many forgeries abound and Ebay is filled with Relic offers. “Caveat emptor” is appropriate here.
Peace!

I would contact the Diocese where the seller is located. They will investigate.

It is Saint Maria Goretti (apparently) it does not say what class of relic, although I have enquired about it and gotten no answer as of yet
