My Pastor gave a wonderful sermon today (I don’t know if he writes his own or not) that struck me as an absolutely perfect description of how a Christian can think of His relationship with God and always have His comfort.

A nurse somewhere thought of the idea of giving baby blankets to new mothers who had to leave their babies in the hospital when they went home, for the mothers to wrap themselves in. The blankets carried the smell of the mother, and they discovered that the babies were much calmer and less fussy if they were wrapped in the blanket that had the smell of it’s mother on it. Scientists have discovered that the sense of smell is the sense that will provoke the most memories in humans.

Because we who are baptized have the Holy Spirit living in us, we are “wrapped” in God and always carry the “smell of God” with us. When we have hardships and trials, the “smell” of God that we recognize helps to calm and comfort us, as the blankets did the newborns, who recognized the smell of the mother. Do we not call the Holy spirit the “Comforter”?

I thought this was beautiful enough to share on the forums as a way to help us in our times of need (and every day also).

Yes, this is a very nice reminder, that the Lord will wipe away every tear from our eyes and grant us a place of eternal rest with Him if we follow His Word and live His Gospel.

May God bless you all this Pentecost and always! 🙂
