I’m a male who, after years of carrying rosaries in my pocket that always got broken, finally bought one that is made with “unbreakable” parachute cord. It’s very cool and I’ve had it blessed but the problem I have is that, as a result of the cord, the beads are much larger and wooden so it takes up a lot of room in my pocket. However, I can wear it comfortably as a necklace under my shirt.

My cradle Catholic wife (I converted in 1995) insists that it’s not “appropriate” to wear a rosary as a necklace, yet I have seen religious vocations do it. Other research, including asking a couple of priests, has been conflicting or vague.

So please settle this little issue: Is it appropriate to wear a rosary as necklace?

As long as it is not worn as a mere decoration or gang symbol (yes, some gangs use it for that), it’s fine to wear it if it’s more convenient to carry that way. The rosary is a sacramental used for a private devotion. Certainly, if we can wear crucifixes why would it be wrong to wear a rosary? As long as it is used/worn with respect, you can do whatever you like with it. 🙂

Yes, to what Della said, but you can also buy very inexpensively a knotted rosary. Less than 2 bucks and it will fit very easily in any pocket.

Della is correct so going forward wear it if that is what you want to do. As pianistclare said, there are other options available (I have a rosary ring that is great for praying while driving).

I do think one of the advantages of wearing it reverently as a necklace is that the beads and bulk may serve as a gentle “reminder” when we are tempted (my Guardian Angel needs to hit me with a 2x4 when I am :D)

Thanks everyone, that was my understanding, but now I have other sources which my wife usually pays more attention to. 😃

The Combat Rosary is quite durable and should fit nicely in your pocket.

As long as you are wearing it respectfully and not to “show it off” like a piece of fine jewelry wearing at as a necklace is acceptable.

You know I do not use one. There’s one around somewhere but I like this site. And it’s very easy. Or get a brochure.

I got tired of the chain coming apart or the string getting dirty so I got one of these…
