Thanks. I understand that presumption is a sin against the first commandment but are there any other scriptural verses that might be more explicit? Since the sin of presumption is a sin against the theological virtue of Hope. You might want to find scripture related to Hope. i.e 1 Cor.

To me this demonstrates once again that the bible is not a person’s owner’s / operator’s / shop manual. Do not allow him restrict you to the bible alone paradigm. The CCC’s expanation that the sin of presumption is one against the first commandment didn’t seem to be very complicated. Use it to guide you explanation to him.Thanks. I thought the sin of presumption is one taking advantage of God’s mercy, forgiveness, and saving grace. That is, one thinks they can sin over and over, go to confession, receive forgiveness without ever truly repenting. We presume that God will look the other way and forgive us always.

Ok, thanks. I’ll give it a shot. However my explanation will not likely be a good enough. I think there are a few appropriate verses from Saint Paul.
There’s the verse telling us to work out our salvation ‘in fear and trembling’ (Philippians 2:12). And the verse where Paul states ‘let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall’ (1 Corinthians 10:12).
These certainly argue against ever allowing ourselves to take for granted that we’re saved.
