As we know, our bodies are the temples of God, right?

However, what sins are against our bodies? After all, fornication or sexual sins are the only ones against our bodies, right?

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

This thread should go to Moral Theology Sub-Forum since it deals with sexual sin.

I’d say gluttony (to the point of endangering your health through obesity) or its opposite, dieting to the point of dangerous thinness, would also count as sins against your body.

What about neglecting your health in other ways? A diabetic who deliberately fails to take his or her medication may well be sinning against their ‘temple of the Holy Spirit’.

What about vanity, excessive concern with the adornment and looks of the body, or immodesty in dress (treating your ‘temple’ as a house of ill-repute). I’d say they count too.

Agreed. Sins against the body are not all sexual in nature.

Not to mention drug abuse.

However, to some people any use of alcohol is alcoholism and to some an acceptable weight is what they would want to weigh, not necessarily what is right on someone else.

Your point?
I see people judge others as sinful and look down on them because of a couple of beers at a party or because of a pound here or there and I was thinking this thread could add to that attitude to some people so I mentioned that people see the definitions of these things differently.
Sometimes people judge me as anorexic though I am technically at a perfect weight for my height and frame e.g. and it feels very condemning even though I am not an anorexic anyway and I know it. So I felt like saying something.
Of course real abuse of the body is wrong.

What about smoking? We know it’s harmful. Even in moderation it can cause cancer.

🙂 no body has mentioned the xtreme sports thing. these people are completley nuts, imo. then there is racing the church teaches against contests of speed.this is an issue i kinda have with the church i can support the church’s teaching in the area of course type racing, i am a quarter mile person,a properly equipped car is very safe.and in qm racing there is little danger of being ran into. any one’s comments to this are welcomed

I still think that verse clearly shows the only sin against the body is fornication. If all those other things are sin, then it’s not because they’re against our bodies. They may not be advisable or healthy, but I don’t see how they can be sin.

Extreme body mod would be abuse of the body too, I believe. Are these things covered elsewhere in the Bible? I know gluttony and drunkenness are. But I think the prohibition against tattoos is just part of the Jewish ritual laws.🤷 I don’t know.

…this speaks of fornication it does not mention anything else so one is free to deliberatly endanger thier own life for the sake of personal enjoyment.actually that is what fornication is, personal enjoyment.may i ask do you have a biblical reference that describes what fornication is?

And no, this thread is not about me trying to condone any of these behaviors because I participate in them or want to 😛

I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, never gotten a tattoo, and I don’t ever plan to. I’ve never weighed over 170 pounds though 5’8".

But my point is, it shouldn’t matter. None of that makes us better or worse. We shouldn’t condemn others for doing that, because God looks at their hearts, not at their outward appearances.

e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. generally speaking, behaviors affect the body outwardly, while attitudes affect the body internally. both contribute to our being.

CCC 2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

2291 The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law.

Refer to the modern battle cry “if it feels good do it” and do the opposite in regards to fornication.
