Sin and Dementia

If someone, a Christian commits a mortal sin but now they have dementia and would not be able to confess it to God, are they doomed?

I know a woman with dementia, she is a lovely woman and I do not know if she is in mortal sin, I just wondered but I would like to pray for her soul as she has no idea of prayer or anything like that now.

All I can think of is the Divine Mercy chaplet but I think that needs to be prayed for the dying.

Thanks.

A person with dementia could commit a sin of “grave matter”, but the dementia would call into question the full knowledge and full consent required for one to commit a “mortal sin”.

Prayers for her would be a lovely idea- dementia, in all of it’s manifestations, is a horrible cross to bear.

The problem is, she may have committed the sin when of sound mind. Now that she is of unsound mind, she lacks the capacity to seek forgiveness. It’s a quandary.

  1. You pray for her.
  2. You have her pastor administer the sacrament of the sick.
  3. Continue to pray for her.
When she is near death make sure she receives last rights…

If she can be saved - she will be through these sacraments and graces.

Peace
James

she probably made her confession to God, and He is merciful beyond our ability to understand. God bless.
