I have heard and understand the problems leading from porn and the church doesn’t approve of it but what about alcohol. It seems like in the church alcohol is fine and there’s just as much problems that can arise from it as porn. Isn’t lust lust? Whether it be for a nice form or a frothy one to drink. It seems to me like a double standard.

Why? Why would having a beer at a barbeque be instrincially sinful? Where’s the sin when there no excess? Just a social beer with no problem drinking. For an alcoholic, one beer would be problematic, so an alcoholic who knows he cannot control one beer sins when he takes that beer or drink.

Porn comes with other problems. It begins with lust – a sin if you follow through to the urge. Next, you are viewing people in an act (or other acts that are prohibited) reserved for the sacrament of marriage and that should be private – between you and your spouse. More sin.

Porn almost always leads to masturbation (another mortal sin). If the porn only involves a female – well, you are a party to her sin by viewing her in immodest acts. Same if you are viewing other kinds of porn – you are watching people behave immodestly and sinfully for your own gratification. More and more sin. This is only the beginning.

Porn teaches you to objectify women and may affect your future relationships or your marriage. Porn, if it becomes habit, becomes like alcoholic – an excess. While alcohol in excess can and does harm relationships, one beer does not. Only when it becomes an excess does drink lead to sin. However, if your conscience tells you that one beer is sinful, then you must follow your conscience. But, you cannot equate that nice frothy beer with the viewing of porn.

Why is a photo w/o masterbation for example, considered a sin if you look from time to time. No interruption in a relationship with a woman, women one might know, and the work place? And if one has that beer or two and becomes mean and angry for nothing is that not a sin?

Second part: yes, that person who becomes mean and angry has a problem and I don’t know whether or not he recognizes it as a problem, but he would be sinning to continue. I doubt a beer or two will do it, but if I take that a two beers can do it – then yes, he’s sinning. I think excess and such behavior is really defined by more than 2 beers though I suppose anything is possible.

On the first: a man views a naked picture of a woman or women that he knows but is not married to? You are complicit in their sin of immodesty and to create lust, and you are not married to these women, I assume. Why else would they give you these pics? And if you are married, yet viewing pics of women, you may be doing unknown harm to your marriage and seeking the near ocassion of sin. If you are single, you are actively seeking a near ocassion of sin.

I’m not sure of what you mean about the workplace? Are you an artist or photographer of nudes? What’s the purpose of viewing nude pics of women you know?

I answered based upon your original question in the abstract; if there was more to the question than it might have been helpful if the original post had been more specific as to what the question was. I don’t like doing “what if” because those questions always seem to want agreement.

I answered with what I had to work with.

I am single and have no prospects at this time. I have friends that are women but there’s no romantic relationship. No one I know is giving me nude pics that I know this is men’s magazines and I can see where there could be some dehumanization here but I am very good to the women I know and as far as I know they like me. I do not view them as objects (I don’t believe). I am not a photographer. And I also don’t drink and don’t want to start. It can lead to too many problems.
  1. I am trying to figure out what sin is in these contexts (porn/alcohol)
  2. I am trying to figure out what lust is.
What’s the difference in the pleasure of masterbation and a buzz? Both sound sinful to me.

There are no double standards in the Church, as far as my research has detected.

We are Catholics, and not Puritans. The Church does not go so far as American totalitarians did in outlawing alcohol during Prohibition. The Church does not go so far as saying that no believer may drink, as the Muslims do. It doesn’t make a religion out of temperance, like AA does.

The Church began in a Mediterranean society where wine, &c. was a staple of daily life.

Regarding porn, there is a world of difference: one can become a perpetual drunk, and still retain one’s innocence. Porn corrupts one entirely, perverting what someone finds beautiful, refining his sexuality, and ruining married sex. It creates a second life, in which the Catechism has no voice, and one’s circle of family/friends would find strange and unrecognizable. Also your statement that ‘lust is lust’ is patently stupid… I have yet to meet a can of Miller Lite I’d ****.

For the Church’s endorsement of temperance, begin with:Venerable Matthew Talbot.
One evening in 1884 Talbot, who was penniless and out of credit, waited outside a pub in the hope that somebody would invite him in for a drink. After several friends had passed him without offering to treat him, he went home in disgust and announced to his mother that he was going to “take the pledge” (renounce drink). He went to Holy Cross College, Clonliffe where he took the pledge for three months. At the end of the three months, he took the pledge for six months, then for life.[4]
Having drunk excessively for 16 years, Talbot maintained sobriety for the following forty years of his life. He found strength in prayer, began to attend daily Mass, and read religious books and pamphlets. He repaid all his debts scrupulously. Having searched for the fiddler whose instrument he had stolen, and failed to find him, he gave the money to the church to have Mass said for him.
Talbot was on his way to Mass on Sunday, 7 June, 1925, when he collapsed and died of heart failure. Nobody at the scene was able to identify him. His body was taken to Jervis Street Hospital, where he was undressed, revealing the extent of his austerities. A heavy chain had been wound around his waist, with more chains around an arm and a leg, and cords around the other arm and leg.[3] The wearing of chains and cords was probably less unusual in the 1920s than it is in the 21st century.[clarification needed] Nevertheless, Talbot’s story quickly filtered through the community and there were many spectators when his funeral took place at Glasnevin Cemetery on 11 June 1925.

To be blunt: it teaches one to rely on ideas for arousal rather than just looking down and seeking a beautiful woman underneath you.
And if one has that beer or two and becomes mean and angry for nothing is that not a sin?
You’re conflating the action of having a beer or two with the action of becoming mean and angry.

If you find that your tolerance and self-control with alcohol is so limited, that a beer or two provokes sinful or regrettable actions, you don’t need to have a beer or two. That’s you.

Plenty of others can handle it just fine, within reason, and not lose their temper despite a minimal BAC.

What is termperance? I am kind of new to the church. Since I have looked at porn would it be right for me to take the host? Maybe I should just go to mass and not take the blessed sacrament until I have enough will power and desire to change to work up reconciliation.

Wikipedia is your friend.

Yeah, have a look at the Spiritual Communion.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritual_Communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
I’m told that you can still go up the Communion aisle with your arms folded across your chest, and the priest will know that you’re asking for a blessing rather than the Host.

In any case, you probably shouldn’t go too long without receiving Reconciliation… perhaps mention your quandary to a priest, and they’ll give you better advice than we can. Also, having told someone you’ll see every week that you’re struggling with this might be enough to ‘shame you straight.’ 🤷 Unless of course the shame discourages you from attending Mass ever again… [AA, NA, and other -Anon groups would call this ‘accountability,’ I’m sure, but I don’t see any reason not to call a spade a spade. ;)]

Well it is always wrong to look at porn whereas it is perfectly legitimate to look forward to and enjoy a frothy drink. I can give you scores of scriptures which liken wine to periods of blessing and abundance for Israel. Paul even instructed Timothy to take a little wine with his meal for some digestive problem he was having.

However a recovering alcoholic may not dare to even look at one drink knowing that he would lack the ability to stop drinking. For him it is wise for him to regard lusting after one drink as being a grave sin. So we all must live according to our consciences toward God.

Looking at porn is the sin of concupiscence – which is usually sensual (sexual) and lust falls into concupiscence. It is a selfish desire. You already see how the porn makes the woman into an object. That you have female friends and treat your co-workers is not to deny that the viewing of porn has some adverse effect. The more you do it, the more you will want to do it and Satan is sneaky. If you feel that you have not objectified women, then if you continue I would suggest that it will eventually affect your ability to relate to women. And when if that happens, you won’t realize it has already happened. But since you already can see how it objectifies women, I would suggest that you speak with a priest as soon as you can. And most of the time, porn leads to masturbation. Or, in the least, puts you in a struggle with masturbation. So, it’s the near ocassion to sin.

Second, you are unmarried therefore you, as a Catholic, are prohibited from sexual relations until you are in the sacrament of marriage, and that includes viewing others in that way or in a way reserved for within marriage. But, to seek out nude pics of other women is to seek out selfish lust.

**Offenses against chastity **

2351 **Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.

2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139 **

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

2353 Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young.

2354 **Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials. **

You are called to chastity until you marry. You can be viewing conjugal acts of others that you are prohibited from taking place in until you are married – but viewing others in the conjugal act is a sin too. Do you see the problem? Paying for a magazine supports the evil practices.

Last, if you use alcohol to get a “buzz”, then you are sinning in some form, I cannot say to what degree but if you have an alcohol problem and then intend to drink to get drunk, you may have a problem. It’s the intent to get that “buzz.” But for the most part, and for many people, having a social drink with friends or that cold one at a barbeque presents no problem.

So, it’s the intent for which you use the alcohol. But porn is always intrinsically evil.

If you don’t have such a problem with alcohol, then I would suggest that you not try and compare yourself to someone who does get “buzzed” in order to try and reconcile the viewing of porn magazines. For that you need spiritual advice.

Discuss this with a priest. As the Catechism says, your culpability can be determined by a priest and you should discuss this with him so that you can get on the spiritual path about chastitiy.

Porn is intrinsically evil for all of us – married and unmarried. Alcohol is not always evil, not for all people, and does not affect us all in the same way. Porn is prohibited.

The priest has heard this all before, and many, many times before. You are not the only one who will be confessing that day, and I suspect not the only one with sins of lust, nor are you the first that the priest will have heard. You will find comfort.

Do not delay going to confession until you have worked up the “will.” You will find the priest to be understanding and you will feel incredibly relieved with the grace of the Holy Spirit in a good Act of Contrition.

Get a Catholic Catechism too. There are Catholic books stores and Catholic sites on line where you can buy a Catholic Catechism.

God Bless.

There’s a difference. Jesus drank. Was he sinful?

I would like to believe that Jesus had a drink of wine here and there, not that he drank per
say.🙂

Well, there was wine at Passover and the wedding at Cana. In fact, he made the wine at the Wedding at Cana. I’m sure the Last Supper was not Jesus’s first Passover either.

I went tonight to Sunday service and confesed. I really didn’t feel different but I suppose you don’t have to. Something else they tell me is a sin is to go out on sunday if you can get out and not go to mass.

Well as someone who struggles with addiction to alcohol, I can tell you that the idea of it being a sin is when it becomes more that a norm and actually becomes a Idol in the Alcoholics Life, as does Porn to the Addict. Its a slippery slope one travels when getting into either on a regular basis. Porn is Lust, and if you are looking at another woman , she may or may not be married and you do not know it, so you may be thinking of Coveting the mans wife… So If I were you I would do what I do and keep our Body and Mind Pure. I know it may not be what you want to hear but it all starts at some point and grow and grow until it can take over. Trust me as a living testament to what addiction has done to me. :dts:

Do you find this problematic, as well?
I do not have a car but my mother has one and she lets me use it sometimes. The buses don’t run on Sunday so I have had the car at times on Sunday and neglected to go to mass. I mentioned that tonight at confession. I am going to try and change that. If she doesn’t let me have the car I guess there’s nothing I can do. I’m 42 and on disability for emotional problems and can’t afford a car myself.

Talk to the priest and explain the circumstances; call the rectory. Sometimes the priest knows of someone in your area who is a parishioner and who will take you to Mass with them and bring you back. Some Churches already have something set up. You should not miss Mass. If possible, and your mother allows you to have the the car, does your Church have Saturday Vigil because that satisfies the Sabbath obligation?

If you are creative, you can find a way. If you have the car on Sunday, you must go to Mass. Explain to your mother that this is important and try and work something out with her that she will allow you access to having the car, using it to go to Mass and confession.

I’m sorry you did not feel different. This is going to take some time. You will feel different if you can get back into a regular schedule of Mass and confession.

If nothing else works, watch the Mass at EWTN. Don’t use this as a substitute, but for when you absolutely have no way and no one can take you or your mother will not let you use of the car. Possibly, too, at times a priest may make a house call if you explain that you have no way of getting to receive communion and receive confession.

God Bless.
