Since we believe in Purgatory and agree this is where one is cleaned up from the effects of sin.Do the Catholics believe that God can deliver down judgement on the living for their past sins?Even if one repented for the sin?

If someone has completed penance for a past sin, then they will not be punished (i.e. purged) for that sin.

I agree. There are many protestant teachings that give cause for one to believe differently.Such as some teach that when death or sickness strike that this is punishment from past sins. Like God getting even. Many have left God for this very reason. Some protestant teachings leave out the part that God is love, leaving one to feel as if God is a dictator saying worship me or I"ll kill out the whole lot of you.I bet other non-Catholics or even converts will agree to what I say in this regards:)
Thank You for your response.

Good men do nothing bad, and bad things happen to them.
Bad men do nothing good, and nothing bad happens to them.
And most men have a bit of both.

No seeming connection to God being involved.

God is not in the business of striking people dead that ought to be lately. So, if there is a punishment in the here and now, it is totally random in how it is applied.

Since we believe in Purgatory . . .
What do you mean by “we?” Are you Catholic?

This teaching actually sounds quite similar to what Catholics call “the temporal punishment due to sin.” We believe that after we are forgiven our sins, there is still something left on our soul that needs to be cleared away (thus, we have Purgatory). This is why Catholics receive a penance after confession, to clear this temporal punishment away. This temporal punishment is what causes sickness and the like. This can be shown by . . .

2 Samuel 12:13-14
“13 David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the LORD.’ And Nathan said to David, ‘The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child that is born to you shall die.’”

As you can see, David was forgiven his sin, but his child had to die because of that sin.

Interesting. Anyone who has read Job, chapter 1, would not come to this conclusion. :o

I"m glad you see it that way,God is not in the business of striking people down.God gets blamed for the bad things when really God is Love.
I use this testimony when I feel like I need to share it.The reason being is no one really understands just exactly what it means to lay down one’s life for another.Like Jesus did for us.The night my son died,I begged and pleaded with the Lord to take my life instead and give my son’s life back to him.I would have done that in a heart beat if only it were possible.
A few months later this came to mind and that’s when I really understood how much Jesus/the Lord loved me.He laid down his life so that I could have eternal life. And I finally understood after my son died just how much the love that a person has that would be willing to do that and I mean really do that.

So sorry to hear about your loss.

Best to you in all you do

Jesus committed no sins. Absolutely none. He was perfect.

The suffering he went through could not have been payback for sins, because he had none.

His death on the cross was for our sins, He is the Lamb without spot or blemish.
Is 53:5 But he was wounded for our iniquities, he was bruised for our sins: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his bruises we are healed.

Even after you have repented, yes, if you have not done sufficient penance for the sin.

The examples of this in scripture are many. King David, for example, after repenting his sin, was forgiven by God but still punished. The Israelites provide examples plenty of this, forgiven but punished for justice’s sake and their own.

God punishes for people’s own good, and for the great good of His justice. When we love God we embrace the hand that delivers both hurt and caress.

All the world is in the hands of God’s Providence which guides both disasters, plagues, and punishments, as well as consolations, reliefs, and helps.

‘Happy indeed the man whom God corrects! So do not refuse this lesson from the Omnipotent: for He who wounds is He who soothes the sore, and the hand that hurts is the hand that heals.’

Job 5:17-18

‘Thank and sweetly kiss the hand of God that strikes you, because it is always the hand of a Father who strikes you because He loves you.’

St. Padre Pio

‘Every time that some unexpected event befalls us, be it affliction, or be it spiritual or corporal consolation, we should endeavor to receive it with equanimity of spirit, since all comes from the hand of God.’

St. Vincent de Paul

Dear LOUEMMA,
Thank you for sharing your brief life story with us,You mentioned about God "taking"the life of your son and that you would rather that God give his life back and “take” yours instead.Any Mother would feel the same as you ;as any parent would rather take on a sickness ,rather to see their child suffer! That is why Jesus uses(about Himself) the image in scripture, about a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings.A priest friend of mine at funerals, likes to focus rather not on God taking a life, but on God receiving that person into the joy of his kingdom. In one sense you gave your son back to where he belongs and your son awaites the day when you too will give your life to God.Jesus said when He died Father receive my spirit or rather "into your hands I comment my spirit"It is a loving gift. That is why I believe our lives are torn and in conflict;our spirits(souls) are drawn to God and as St Augustine writes “our hearts are made for thee oh God and they cannot find rest until thet rest in thee” but our bodies are of this earth and we cling to life.As the Catechism says to the question Why were you made?“It was to know, love and serve God here on earth and to be happy with Him FOREVER in Heaven”–your story will have a happy ending! So you are right to feel that God took away your sons life from you from an earthly perspective, but in a spiritual point of view your sons’ spirit flew to God, like a magnet pulls iron to itself.I know it is off the thread ,yet it is not in a way as the God in scripture is a loving, caring God,slow to anger and rich in compassion. But we can use our sufferings to make up for our sins,my dad about a year before he died told me (as he suffered very much),we have to suffer either in this life or the next and he would rather do his purgation(purification or purgatory) in this life.In one way you have already benefited from your childs going to God, as your sufferings and pain have given you such beautiful insites on how God so loved the world that he gave up His Son to save us from the pain of Hell and to take us all with Him to Heaven(for those who believe and are baptised) for all eternity.

Thank You but this testimony is for the Lord’s glory and honor.
I know the Lord did not take my son’s life, free will and sin did.Knowing that my son is saved,I suppose the events leading up to his death would be the reason I began my search on the possibility of Purgatory. However we have a just God and a merciful God and I am confident my son is now in Paradise with the Lord:)
Each one of us has the desire placed in us to learn of and know our creator.Whether it is someone who was born into the faith, believing as far back as their memory carries,or someone who is still searching for him. However there are some of us who search as if we were blind, knowing there is a creator but searching for him as in the dark.
Now in having said this,I know from personal experience that depending upon what a person has been exposed too,we will reach a conclusion on just who the creator is and what the nature of the creator is.I suppose that by posting this I feel the need to share with others that our creator is a most loving Father, even if we are still searching for him.Sometimes if we stop and just be still the Father will find us:)
I do know that all will be restored to me in the end.Just as with Job.🙂
I hope those who are still searching to know,"keep searching because he is very real and just as like the night my son died, the Lord was there with me to comfort a mother and this is how I know my Heavenly Father is very real and has revealed his Love to me.For those who seek him,he"ll find you and he loves you unconditionally because he laid his life down so that we who believe in him can and will have eternal life:)
