Sin during sleep?...Against chastity?

I’m really scared about this and don’t really know what to do. Please be helpful and please don’t judge me. I need your prayers and help.

I’m on my period and when I woke up this morning I had blood on one of my fingers. I was scared and I had no idea what happened. I looked it up to see if this happened to anyone else before. The only things I found where this happened, was when a girl masturbated. I’m really scared that I might have done that in my sleep. I know you technically can’t commit a mortal sin while asleep, but I’m still scared. I always remained pure and chaste and never did anything impure like this before. I’m scared. Am I no longer chaste? Am I impure? Please help me. I don’t know what to do.

Relax. You cannot sin while you are asleep.

If you are regularly troubled by scruples like this, you should talk to an experienced priest. They usually have good advice for the scrupulous as they have dealt with them many times before.

I can’t remember who it was who said it off the top of my head, but it is not possible to sin while you are not in control of your faculties. Sleep counts, that’s why say a young boy going through puberty having night time emissions isn’t sinning.

Ex-nurse here - just to reassure you, it’s far more likely that you had an itch “down there” and you scratched yourself in your sleep. We all respond to skin irritations, even when we don’t really know what we’re doing during sleep.
