Hello Years ago I might have done things on a computer that are illegal and in another catholic forum I asked about these things and was told I need to confess them. So I went to confession and confessed them. After that confession I was thinking to myself that even though these things were deleted from our old computer they still might be there somewhere, soo being very irrational and paranoid I threw away our old computer that just sat on the garage floor w/o permission from my parents. Did i commit a sin by throwing away are old computer that no one used that just sat in the garage collecting dust? Im pretty sure it didnt work anymore anyway.

This happened a couple months ago and no one has said anything about the very old computer being thrown out so i guess im just womdering did i commit mortal sin by throwing out the old computer?

Given the value of the computer (almost worthless, or less than worthless), and the circumstances, I think there is no need to worry about mortal sin.

I recommend that you mention it next time you are in confession (that is “next time”, not “next Saturday”) because you still might need to make some small, equivalent, restitution to your parents. I think it unlikely, but the confessional is the right place to ask.

Oh, and very, very, well done purging yourself of that sin in your life, and getting rid of that computer (regardless of how you did it)!

Ill bring it up next confession. Do I have to get into detail about what exactly i did that was illegal or can i just word it like i did here because i already confessed it (obviously if the priests asks me to get into more detail i will)? It was embarrassing enough confessing it the first time. Also i dont think my parents are worried about it being gone its been a month plus and they haven’t said anything. They have like 4+ computers at their house soo this old one that was on the garage floor was most likely worthless to them.

Just word it like you did here - that it was “illegal”, and also mention that you have already confessed the illegal material - otherwise he might need to ask for a little more detail.

mention that you have already confessed the illegal material
Even that is too much. Because you will begin your confession with, say, “My last confession was 4 weeks ago”, all you need to do is mention “2 years ago, I acquired some illegal material on my computer”. Hence, you have already been absolved of that, regardless of what it was, or how you acquired it.

It’s a minor quibble, and you certainly won’t go wrong with “I have already confessed this…”, but it is good to build a habit of complete trust in your last absolution. Your priest will have complete trust in it. 🙂

Well technically my last confession was less than a week ago. I just recently started really thinking about weather or not the throwing away of the computer was a sin or not. Ill just bring it up at my next confession like you suggested better safe than sorry.

So i was thinking about this and was wondering If I even need to bring up my past already confessed sins. Couldn’t I just say, “about a month ago I threw away an old computer that was stored in our garage on the floor and i did not consult my parents about it before doing it. Im not sure if I sinned by throwing it out but if I did i am truly sorry.”
