I think it’s two sided. Practically the first words out of Jesus’ mouth when he met Jesus were “I am a sinful man.”

Knowing Him convicts us of our own sin. That is a profound grace, because when we see ourselves in truth, we are that much closer to Truth itself and we can relate to Truth with greater integrity.

Oh heck I’d just have a checklist on the computer and tick off which of the ‘usual’ I’ve done every day or week

I try to do this anyway (analyse the circumstances of my sins) without the benefit of writing it down. It’s certainly helpful.

Wow, can you post a copy of your checklist?

Sometimes I just feel like going into confession and telling the priest “it’s just the usual.”

A daily journal does not of necessity need to be a record of sins…just how the day went, or since one last wrote, or whatever one would like to write. I have heard of people keeping a daily journal and instead of writing “Dear Diary”, it is “Dear Jesus”. Some find journalling helpful…others not.

Do you think that you might forget that satin wants us to remember all negative points and not think of God.

Just a point from me.
I, as soon as I sin (in any way) ask God to forgive me, and if possible I ask that person to forgive me.
I then ask God to bless that person and I put them on my prayer chain so I remember to bless them.

Good point re Satan wanting us in a negative frame of mind. And a good habit and suggestion … to immediately ask God for forgiveness and the person too if possible…and to remember them in prayer.

God is LOVE and love is all we need. Anything else is a mismatcn. The world is full of mismatches but we have been given the tools of “discernment” to gain fortitude and faith in our God who lives for ever in our heart should we place all thought and mind into having God as the center of our lives.

I learned something interesting today and wanted to share and hear your opinions on it. What do you guys think of keeping a sin journal? I believe you record any big sins in it that you struggle with, circumstances around these sins, and meditate on what you can do to improve. Sound like a good idea? I was thinking it might make going to confession a little more organized too. Thoughts?

Might help for remembering them for confession.

if it helps you then by all means do it…but ask yourself this…is there any chance that your jounal could be read by anyone…and ask yourself how would you feel if someone read it…
if the things that you are going to put in your jounal are things that you wouldn’t share with anyone except god and a priest then you need to get a lock for your jounal or put it in a box or drawer that locks…
i personally wouldn’t keep a book because even if people didn’t mean to pry they might see the book and once they have opened the book and started reading then your privacy is invaded…

If and a big IF, I were to do this…I would rip it up after Confession.

Clean after Confession…no sense in going back and looking at your sins. They are forgiven…so I would perfer to forget them as well.

Once my sin is forgiven, it is forgiven. I would find it detrimental to my spiritual health personally to have a reminder of what God has already taken off my shoulders. The journal would be too large and heavy in time, and I would feel like I was carrying that sin around with me still. Jesus said his yoke was light. So for me, it would be extra baggage I dont need to carry anymore, Christ took care of it already- its gone.

But, if its helpful for others that is up to them.

Better to keep a prayer journal and I have several now, one for the rosary after mass and another for adoration time, my most special one and another for bedtime prayer night and one for meal time supper this one I forget aalot. sigh it is nice to think of sin and ask for help and pray for otheres and thank and praise God for all.
I don’t think He wants us to dwell on the sin it is forgiven if you do over ask for guidance and power for restraint in your life pause a lot and pray it helps me.

If you are going to keep this journal I would also write down next to each sin how you could have handled those situations differently as a help for spiritual progress.
