Can someone please explain this concept? I was told I was committing a sin of omission and I am having issues agreeing with it. There are certain activities that some friends of mine do, and I do not participate however I am there. I told the priest about it and he told me that by not committing the sin itself, and still being present that I am committing a sin of omission and I need to confess it. Even after I told him I felt like I was there to evangelize. How is not committing a sin still wrong?

I wonder if you aren’t thinking of the ways to be an accessory to sin?

9 Ways To Be an Accessory to Sin
  1. By Silence (peccatum taciturnitatis or the sin of silence)
  2. By Counsel
  3. By Command
  4. By Concealment
  5. By Consent
  6. By Partaking
  7. By Provocation
  8. By Praise (or Flattery)
  9. By Defense of the Ill Done
Yet I will go into sins of omission a little bit too here. Incidentally, number 1 above is a sin of omission.

Sins of Omission (I omitted something I SHOULD have done and was in a position to do)

Sins of omission are sins because you were interiorly (or explicitly) called to do something but didn’t do it.

Sins of omission can be not grave or they can be grave.

You can sin against faith, hope, and charity for example.

For instance, we are called to persevere or persist in hope.

If someone doesn’t persist in hope, he/she sins by despair (despair = “I don’t want to go to Heaven as I just don’t belong there.”) or presumption (presumption = “Hey. I’m saved and I can’t lose my salvation. I’ll go to Heaven no matter what I do or don’t do!”).

You can sin against charity via sins of omission too.

(These guys below omitted doing charitable things THEY were called to do in THEIR lives)

MATTHEW 25:31-46 31 “When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. 34 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? 38 And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? 39 And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food,** I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’** 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.’ 46 And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

In Summary:

‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.’
  • I was hungry and you gave me no food
  • I was thirsty and you gave me no drink
  • I was a stranger and you did not welcome me
  • Naked and you did not clothe me
  • Sick and in prison and you did not visit me
Omission. These people OMITTED things they were called to do.

Hope this helps with your question.

God bless.

Father Hardon’s Modern Catholic Dictionary:

OMISSION. Willful neglect or positive refusal to perform some good action that one’s conscience urges one to do. Such omission is morally culpable, and its gravity depends on the importance of what should have been done, on the person’s willfulness, and the circumstances of the situation.
