Hello, I just joined Facebook. I was wondering if it would be scandal to friend someone who has a picture where they aren’t wearing modest clothes, since their picture shows up on your friend list. I added my cousin as a friend, but now I’m worried I might be committing the sin of scandal by doing this.

Help is greatly appreciated!

I added a cousin who is married to a minister, news to me, and she only posted Bible quotes. I was able to get her to respond to a family recipe. Then, all of a sudden, she was not a Facebook friend … She has just divorced the minister! I quit Facebook, despite being connected to our Parish ***'t pastor, who, I think befriends everyone … Although, he had me wait one month. Okay, he favors the youth … The youth! Or maybe those not so young publish the most “scandalous” things. If you can’t bear it, just find something better to do with your time then trying to be leaven on Facebook!

Also, would it be sin by an occasion of sin for me to go onto Facebook because someone I know has an immodest picture that causes me to lust? Or is this one of those neccesary risks in life that I should just avoid looking at the picture?

Your questions are tending towards the scrupulous. Make sure you talk to your priest about the situation. You seem to think many every day things are sins.

Regarding the sin of scandal, I don’t think you understand what it means:

2284 Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor’s tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

But wouldn’t it be scandal since you are allowing for an immodest photo to go onto your page because you befriended them?

As for occasion of sin, would it be sinful to go onto Facebook knowing that there will be immodest photos? And I have a profile picture that causes me pride sometimes. Should I get rid of it, or try to overcome it? I keep feeling compulsed to put a religious symbol for it.

I am getting help for scrupulosity, but I think it is good to get a few other answers, too. And my meetings are just once a week (which is hard to wait for.)

I think if you are going to specific photo’s in Facebook or in the JC Pennies catalog for that matter for the purpose of lust, you have possibly encountered a near occasion of sin.

Especially if the pictures lead you into impurity. I have de-facebooked “Friends” or at a minimum “hidden” them for some of what you mention. If someone considers this scrupulous, then I guess I am scrupulous too!

Better safe then sorry.

If they are very immodest…certainly I would not want them on my site…

there are degrees of immodesty…
so I can not really say…

But if you think it will really be tempting thing for others…I would have post it…

For one does not want oneself to be the cause…per se of any sin…etc…

that second to last line should say " I would not post it"

I will say that they aren’t horribly immodest. It’s pretty much just what teenage girls wear today. It isn’t really you posting it, it’s you become friends with them and their picture will show up in your friends list and if they ever post anything on your site. I feel kind of iffy about accepting friend requests from girls I know because they may post immodest pictures.

I also feel like I should get rid of my own picture because it causes me pride sometimes. I like to look at it. I keep feeling compulsion to change my picture to a religious symbol.

Thanks for the help!

I would really appreciate an answer since I have some girls I know that I want to friend, but feel like I’m committing the sin of scandal by doing this.

Hi McatholicN I was reading through all of your questions and you are not being scandolous nor sinful by adding these girls. You are also not being prideful by having your picture up.

I have to agree with what others say about you possibly being scrupulous. You should check into that because you don’t want your scrupulousness to be something that ruins your life or something that causes you to lose your faith because you are being tormented by it. 😦

Do you have any evidence that these wouldn’t be sins? It’s one thing to say it, but it would be nice to know.

I hate to keep this thread alive for so long, but I’d really like an answer quick.

And also, what if you friend someone who at the time doesn’t have an immodest picture, but then changes it to something immodest?

We can only control what we do - not what others do. For instance I have some friends that go from having very nice things to not very nice clothing. And what they wear is a reflection of them not me.

However, my one friend who is male and puts up Bible verses all the time who then shared a female friends pic in a bikini and hit like this made me do a double take because that was an actual action - especially since he puts up a Holier Than Thou image. When I did my last “Facebook Cleansing” that friend went bye, bye.

It would be a kindness for you to ask your friend to choose a more appropriate picture of herself, since potential employers and boyfriends might be looking her up on FaceBook. Remind her that her avatar shows up, along with her location and marital status, even if the person looking her up is not on her “friends” list. She should present herself as she would if she were on a first date or job interview.

But in a way, we are committing scandal by allowing their photo to be shown on our page. It’s their choice to put the photo up, but our choice to allow it to be shown.

And what would be considered immodest enough to be committing scandal. The pictures I’m referring to are girls wearing the typical teenage skin-showing clothes.

I’m not sure what this means. What exactly is showing?

My experience of typical teenage clothes here in Canada is that they tend to be sloppy, mis-matched, and ill-fitting, but not generally skin-tight, and not generally showing much of anything, except by accident.

Short-shorts, spaghetti straps, etc.
