Sin or medical condition

If you would take insulin for diabetes, or set a broken bone, you should take your medication, along with counseling and prayer.

If you had diabetes and people made you feel like you should will yourself out of it through prayer alone and maintained it was a spiritual problem, you would ignore them, and take your medication. Emotions and moods being involved changes absolutely nothing.

“Mental” illness is simply a physical illness in the brain. It has chemical and physiological causes. You should be no more ashamed than you would be if you had cancer.

I will pray for you.

I have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder 1. I have been having some rather extreme anger outbursts lately and I am having trouble differentiating whether it is a sin or a disease. I prefer to think it is a moral failing and that I can correct it through counseling and with God’s help. But I keep doing the same thing over and over again and I fear I am going to destroy my family. I am scared to take any medication for the condtion due to stigma, and side effects.
It’s definitely a mdeical confition. My brother had it. He died from it.
Take your meds

My brother had clinical depression back in the 1960s - before there were adequate meds. He died from it too. (Agree - if you had diabetes, would you be unwilling to take insulin? No.)

Dear Agent, your resistance to taking medication is troubling to me. I am bipolar and was not open to help until I became delusional with psychotic features. I had to be carted off to the hospital twice by the police in handcuffs and shackles because I was no longer able to know that I needed help. I was at the time a daily communicant and receiving spiritual direction from my priest. Ten years ago it began with angry outburts. If only I had gotten help then.
