Sin or scrupulosity?

I got a big jug of water at the store for $5 and had it sitting kind of lopsided in the cart and my son pointed out it was leaking around the top as we were going to load it in the car. I took it back in to exchange and the girl said it was leaking because you have to keep the bottles upright but to ahead and exchange.
I did exchange but feel guilty now wondering if what I did was stealing since I made it leak by sitting it lopsided. I just didn’t know you had to keep it upright :(. Do you think this should be confessed?
 
I don’t see how this can be considered stealing since they said you could get a new one. If you are not meeting with a spiritual director for scrupulosity,please do.

Do you suffer from scrupulosity a lot? That will allow you to answer your question.

How on earth would this be stealing? You paid for a purchase, you do not expect it to be defective.

You did not “make” it leak. It is obviously poorly packaged. It should be sealed. It should not leak.

I think you are being very scrupulous. Confess what?
 
The girl was wrong in this case. Bottled water shouldn’t leak that easily.

But even if she had been right it should not have been a problem. Grocery stores expect a certain amount of breakage and replace many items for customers even if it’s clear the customer is at fault. (Obviously there is going to be limit to what a store can afford to do but one jug of water should be well below that limit.)
 
Absolutely not a sin. Why would you buy a bottle of water, make it leak just so that you can get a new one?
