I posted a question regarding purchasing fiction books that are based in a world where certain Protestant views are correct and the Catholic Church is incorrect a few days ago. I have a question that goes along with that one. Does anyone think it would be a sin to read a book series like that for purely entertainment because the story is interesting, if your secure in faith and realize the theology is wrong?

No. It’s not wrong to read a book that has a religion different to your own whether that is fiction or non fiction.

I think if you’re concerned or still worrying about reading certain books, you should address this with your Priest.

Not a sin but is it wise?
I’m reading a book at the moment which is about an atheist who ends up becoming an agnostic. It’s full of the hard questions of the kind we see on caf actually. I mean hard questions, like why does God allow bad things to appen to good people and harder. It’s no surprise to me because Ive seen these questions before and been inncoulated to some degree but perhaps only because I have good reasons to believe in God.

If I hadn’t experienced God actually in my life and was only armed with blind faith I’d be confused again at the very least, and possibly become an agnostic just as the author did by the the end of the book.

I hope this is a cautionary tale and a heads up for you. You know your history best and I’ve no doubt you will be fine. If you do have any doubts then maybe it might be wise to skip it?
God bless and keep the faith.

For my Religious Studies major, I have classes where I have to read, study, and write on different denominations, religions and such. I think researching and growing intellectually on these subjects has made me more compassionate and understanding with those of differing faiths and also has helped me apologetically, knowing what specific Bible verses would be most helpful for those of differing faiths when they have questions.

That said, if someone isn’t pretty solid and informed in their own faith, studying other faiths could open your mind to ideas that might sway you and that’s not a good thing if it causes you to question the faith.

If literature is anti-Catholic or anti-Christian or perhaps satanic, these could be sinful to read, I stay away from that stuff. But that’s a conversation I’d have with a spiritual director if you are wondering about that
