what is the sin of onenism (not sure what the correct spelling is)?

What’s the long version? I mean, why is it considered contraception and why is it debated a lot?

Because Onan spilled his seed on to the ground, i.e. masturbated. German verb for masturbate is onanieren.
Whether a man masturbates or uses a condom or a woman uses some form of artifical birth control it all comes under Contraception.
Sexual intercourse is restricted to within a marriage and the man must always climax inside his wife because the couple must remain open to life.

Onan committed many sins 1) Refused the customs/laws concerning his sister-in-law (wife) 2) disobeyed god, 3) refused the linage of the first born 4) contracepted, 5)mislead his sister-in-law (wife) and 6) enjoyed sex outside of marriage. Later dad makes a prostitue out of the same woman (his daughter-in-law). Great story huh (usccb.org/nab/bible/genesis/genesis38.htm

Onanism is contraception because it is a deliberate act by the male to prevent conception by withdrawing prior to ejaculation. Well it is debated a lot because just like any contraceptive method, so many people have justifications of using this method. The Church explicit teaches that any method that tampers with the nature of the sexual act is morally evil. Every sexual act must be done in the context of marriage and therefore must be open to conception.
