Well the yards and front gardens are especially nice this year.

And we go down the shore weekly.

The most memorable trip I’ve taken was when we as a military family did a PCS (permanent change of station) from Ft. Wainwright, AK to Ft. Rucker, AL. My husband a CWO and Chinook pilot was scheduled to go through an advanced training course in his military career. Ft. Rucker is known as the Home of Army Aviation and from flight school forward, aviators fluctuate in and out of Ft. Rucker. Luckily our travel time was during the summer months so we were able to drive our Chevy Suburban down the AlCan Hwy to Haines, AK where we took the Alaskan State Ferry through the Inside Passage to Washington. Our Suburban was outfitted for us to be able to camp/sleep in along the isolated drive. My husband had mapped out the itinerary that was just a couple hundred miles shy of 6,000 miles. From Seattle we drove down the West coast of the United States to San Francisco. My husband wanted to visit an Aunt and Uncle who lived near there. From the West coast, we took I-10 across the southern most part of the U.S. It would be impossible to comment on all of the incredibly beautiful sights we saw but I’ll point out a few.
We crossed the mighty Yukon River from AK and into Dawson City, Yukon Territory on a flat barge type ferry. Awesome and scary! The AK Ferry trip was spectacular and a lot safer. Saw glaciers, whales and myriad of birds. Most of the short trip was calm except when the ferry crossed sections that were more exposed to the open waters of the Pacific Ocean. Being 4 months pregnant, I didn’t do that well on a rocking boat. In Seattle we spent time visiting Army friends who took us to a restaurant called Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff and Petts. It was a memorable meal and the first time I had Creme Brulee! We drove the Pacific Coast Highway south and were treated to some amazing coastal scenery. I remember pulling off of the highway to watch and listen to sea lions sunbathing on the rocks. In Northern California we got to see the giant Redwoods. And heading south we went through the California wine country, crossed the Golden Gate bridge then did the touristy things in San Francisco. While visiting my husband’s family his Aunt delighted us with a visit to Disneyland. Our son was 5 years old and really enjoyed this part of our trip.
For the rest of our journey we had to drive more miles per day. The last time we camped in our Suburban was in El Paso at a rest stop on I-10. It was hot and not comfortable for sleeping. After midnight we heard yelling and gun fire near by. My husband told me to stay in the back with our son while he drove us away to safety just in his BVDs! The drive across TX was long and my olfactory memories recall numerous cattle yards. Visual memories from LA include misty early morning sunshine through the trees of the Bayou. Hauntingly beautiful and hypnotic. We made use of every day of my husband’s 30 day military leave and created a vacation that I will never forget. Since I did a lot of traveling as a military wife, I am now content to be an armchair traveler in my later years.
